Drunk woman admits using racist terms to taxi driverA 31-YEAR-OLD woman who racially abused a taxi driver before throwing her shopping onto the road has been given a suspended sentence.
Emma Lowe, who was drunk, was arguing with her partner when the taxi driver arrived to pick them up.
The cab driver told them he would take the man first and then would come back for Lowe.
Derby Crown Court heard that Lowe had then "lost it" with the taxi driver – she told him she was ringing the police, swore at him and repeatedly used a racist term.
David Outterside, prosecuting, said: "The taxi driver said he was distressed and drove off, as he left this defendant was throwing her shopping all over the road."
The taxi driver called the police and they turned up to Midland Road, in Swadlincote, where Lowe was and arrested her.
Lowe, of The Cutting, Hartshorne, admitted committing a racially aggravated public order offence on October 8.
Christopher Geeson, in mitigation, said Lowe had "a troubled childhood" and had started taking drugs at a young age. But the court heard that she was currently on a drugs programme on which she was "making progress".
Handing Lowe a two-month jail sentence suspended for a year, Judge Ebrahim Mooncey said: "Clearly you had lost your temper with your partner."
The judge said he knew the argument was about her boyfriend intending to buy drugs and she was trying to stop him.
Speaking about the offence, Judge Mooncey said: "He's a taxi driver and he should not have to put up with words like that."
Lowe will be supervised by the probation service and must obey a two-month curfew between 10pm and 7am.
