Derby thug stamped on reveller's head and robbed taxi driver on same night

A VIOLENT man repeatedly stamped on a reveller's head and then robbed a taxi driver hours later.

CCTV captured the brutal, unprovoked assault by Leon Wilks in the city centre, showing him stamp forcibly on his victim's head three times as well as kick it. The victim suffered a bloodied nose and lip, a grazed eye-brow and pain to his arms.

About three hours later, at 6.30am, Wilks, 21, and a friend robbed a taxi driver. The other man punched the cabbie and snatched his wallet and they both fled – after being asked for a fare of £2.90.

Jailing Wilks for four years and six months, Judge Jonathan Gosling said: "I'm very concerned about your case and wondered whether I should adjourn for further inquiries to see if I was justified in concluding you were a dangerous offender. You probably are but given your youth I don't think it's appropriate to make that finding. But if you are involved in any violence in future the court wouldn't have much problem in making that finding."

Judge Gosling said that, in 2008, Wilks was "one of a gang of thugs" who broke into a house and one of the group stabbed the victim.

"In 2009, again with a group of other youths, you went to someone's house and one of them stabbed a victim in the arm and back."

Since then, Wilks has been convicted of three offences of assault and one for possessing a knife in public.

Wilks, of Cavendish Street, Derby, admitted robbery and assault causing actual bodily harm in the two incidents on February 23 and possessing a knife in public on May 13.

The judge continued: "In February you committed two very serious offences.

"The first was in the city centre – it wasn't your argument but you decided to turn on the victim. If you start stamping on someone's head on the ground you can kill them. It was a cowardly and vicious attack."

The court heard that Wilks attacked the man after feeling upset about something the victim's friend had said.

Alex Wolfson, prosecuting, said the robbery had taken place on Leacroft Road, Derby, and had left the taxi driver, who was in his 40s, "extremely shaken".

Will Bennett, in mitigation, told the court that when Wilks was shown the CCTV of the assault he had said: "I didn't think I could do something like that. It's just disgusting".

Mr Bennett said Wilks had shown "real remorse".

wouldn't society be far better off if this chap was taken to Burgh Marsh, made to dig a hole and then shot through the back of the head?

No, it would be far better if they bought him down here to me and left him for a few days. He wouldn't do it again that is for sure.
