Paul Bedford, of Grosvenor Road in Dalton, was thrown from the car when the sliding doors were not closed properly.
The 35-year-old punched driver Mohammed Ahmad several times when he refused to give him his personal details.
Bedford pleaded guilty to assault when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.
The incident happened in the Moldgreen area on May 24.
Laura McBride, prosecuting, said that Mr Ahmad was called to Bedford’s address.
He was asked to take Bedford and another two passengers to a newsagents in Broad Lane.
When they arrived he remained in the taxi while the others went into the shop.
Miss McBride said: “The complainant moved the taxi across the road and the defendant was thrown from the vehicle.
“This was due to the fact that the sliding doors were still open.”
The court heard that Bedford was angry about this and Mr Ahmad would not give him his driver details.
He punched the driver several times in the face, causing his glasses to break.
Mr Ahmad then got out of the taxi and was punched to the stomach by Bedford as he tried to call police.
Bob Carr, mitigating, said that he had defended a taxi driver in a similar matter and he was dealt with very seriously for a road traffic accident.
He said: “The sliding doors were wide open and without any warning the taxi driver decided to move the taxi for his convenience.
“Mr Bedford was thrown from the vehicle, causing injury to himself and protested with the driver.
“He accepts he lost his temper but he feels his actions were somewhat justified.”
District Judge Michael Fanning jailed Bedford for eight weeks.
