Licensing committee to consult on whether to end Exeter taxi restrictions

EXETER’S licensing committee has voted to consult on whether or not to end the restrictions on the number of taxis allowed to operate in the city.

There are currently 66 taxis in the city – in 1987 the city council set the limit at 38 but there has been an average growth of taxi plates of around one per year, to the current figure as a result of successful challenges by applicants to the courts and the licensing committee determining exceptions to its policy of restriction.

Now Robert Norley, the city’s assistant director of environment, has told the committee that there was a great deal of failure demand and wasted work associated with dealing with and hearing applications for taxi plates, their refusal, and defending challenges.

The committee therefore resolved to consult on whether to remove the policy of taxi restriction in a managed way, and enhance the quality controls for taxis to improve standards further and prevent any potential negative impact from de-restriction.

A report will go back to the committee following the consultation so that it can make a final decision.

Perhaps they should just do an email to other authorities to see whether that worked there

There is a very long history to the sud issue down in Exeter.

It appears 20 years of trade fighting/infighting is reaching the end of the road.

I mean we wouldn't want drivers to have a choice would we?

Are 66 hackney carriages enough for a city with a population of around 120,000?

Consultation is the word used by every LA.

CONSULTATION (LA Definition): "A Meeting or Meetings to discuss with the public or concerned parties on any subject that we have already made up our minds about."

I think they need to increase numbers, I was down there last week and it can take up to 45 mins just to get into the centre from the A38, even yesterday morning traffic was queued along the A38 right back to the M5, so several cabs could be stuck in them queues for a good while just when folk might need a cab.
even on a Sunday its a shambles trying to get in

Well if what you're saying is true it will just mean more cabs stuck in queues. More cabs won't solve the congestion problem will it
