Take on a £400 a month debt to buy a new Superb or keep running my 2009 motor (79k miles) when i will have no repayments after this month just to step up from 40mpg to (unknown) 50mpg+

Okay a car/cab brand new is always nice! Buttttt the car you have that will be freeeeeeeee of any payment, it is barely run in. Give yourself a break, take the pressure/necessity out of "GOT" to go to work.....just to cover payments! I would enjoy the freedom as I do now by running the car and enjoying a BUMPER pay rise. Obviously continue to put money (maybe half of what you now pay) to one side in preparation for the day it blows its last smoke, enjoy life a little bit more.

79k today is nothing if looked after.
