IMO the rifle is too short - stick a bayonet on the end of it and tbh you come second - found it really strange of the MOD to go away from an accurate, proven weapon, to a smaller calibre, smaller length rifle. The tradition of the army was always one of accurate shooting - I don't think you can achieve that with the SA80 over the SLR.

I think the SA80 is supposed to be a far more accurate weapon, so much so, they had to redesign the testing range. Something to do with less recoil and the sight on the SA80 making it balls on accurate over longer distances. :-|

Anyhoo my son said you couldn't hit a baron door with an AK, apparently it jumps all over the place. The SA80 is in a different class.

I think the reasoning behind the move from the 7.62 calibre round of the SLR to the 5.56 calibre round of the SA80 is because if you use the 7.62 round the chances are that you will kill the target and that will be that. But with the smaller 5.56 round you are much more likely to injure or maim the target. The injured target will require at least 2 other soldiers to remove the casualty from the battlefield thus for each injured person, 3 are removed from the battlefield where as if the target is killed outright then only that one will be off the battlefield.

Maybe - I was basically told in basic training that we would be fighting the warsaw pact countries and they used the 7.62 - if we were short of bullets we could nick theirs.

This same reasoning is behind our use of 105mm field gun rounds. The Germans were using 100mm rounds and therfore could not use our rounds if captured but with the addition of a sleeve, we were able to use their rounds in our guns.

I'd like to see a comparison with marksman under battlefield conditions - the CLR had less fidgety working parts making cleaning a piece of p*ss compared to the SA80 - which was prone to jamming like the US M16

The AK also jams less under battlefield conditions but you have to be practically standing next to the guy you want to shoot for it to be affective. My son says the SA80 is far more accurate than an AK and I suspect the superior sight and less recoil gives it greater range than the CLR and I think you can carry more ammunition and get more rounds down range when you need it the most.

Plus his one lobs grenades

So we've got Turkey bombing the PKK who are fighting ISIS then we have the British and Americans bombing ISIS? It's nice to know where we stand with Turkey. Nuke them along with ISIS.

My son's SA80 has an under-slung grenade launcher. And he's says the yanks in Camp Bastion loved this type of weapon and wished they had. Although, he also said you soon fall out of love with it when humping the bas*ard around in 40 degree heat. :)

IMO the rifle is too short - stick a bayonet on the end of it and tbh you come second - found it really strange of the MOD to go away from an accurate, proven weapon, to a smaller calibre, smaller length rifle. Hey ho - If I had one I would guarantee ISIS would come no where near Chesterholm
