Plans for distinctive ‘Red cab’ design for Exeter taxis

"A distinctive colour scheme could play a big part in shaping the identity of Exeter"

The Council is considering some significant changes in the way that the taxi trade is licensed across the city. The number of hackney carriage licences (the cabs which people hail from a rank) could be increased from the current limit of 66.

Other measures could include:

• introducing a distinctive colour scheme for Exeter’s cabs, such as the red one pictured

• making in-cab CCTV compulsory

• setting stricter limits on emissions

• Encouraging the use of electric vehicles

Cllr Keith Owen, Lead Councillor for Environment Health and Wellbeing, said: “We feel that the time is right to review taxi provision across the city. A top quality taxi service is important to both residents and visitors and we want to help the trade by holding them to the highest possible standards.

“A distinctive colour scheme could play a big part in shaping the identity of Exeter, just think of New York’s yellow cabs, or the black cabs in London, but we want to know what people think before making any decisions. We will be consulting extensively with the drivers and licence holders but we also want to hear from the public about their experience of using the service.”

Results of the survey, which is being carried out by Marketing Means on behalf of the City Council, will be reported to the Licensing Committee, which will come up with proposals based on the findings.

People can fill in an online survey by going to www.exeter.gov.uk/taxireview The survey will be running until 28 November.
