Coventry taxi boss dies after being run over by driver-less car outside his Nuneaton home

Victim of tragedy on Stockingford estate was a 'lovely man'

A taxi driver from Coventry has died after being hit by a runaway car outside his Nuneaton home.

The 59-year-old family man was trapped under the vehicle, which had earlier been parked on the drive of his house, on a Stockingford estate.

It is believed the saloon car belonged to one of his sons and that it had rolled onto him as he moved it onto the sloping street to make way for his black cab.

The man, named locally as Terry and a member of the Sikh community, was certified dead at the scene, in Pennine Way, near the junction with Quantock Drive.

A neighbour said: “It looks like it was a tragic accident and we are all in a state of shock. He was a lovely man who had lived here for many years with his wife and children and was part of our close-knit community.

“He ran a taxi business in Coventry and had only just arrived home from work. It was terrible to see him lying beneath the car with all the emergency services in attendance. They did not move his body for a couple of hours.”

The tragedy happened just before 6pm last night (Tues) and the suburban street was closed as fire crews were called in to lift the car off the victim.

A Warwickshire Police spokesman said: “Early investigations suggest the man may have been moving the vehicle from the driveway of a property on the road and that the vehicle rolled and collided with him. Police are not treating his death as suspicious and a family liaison office is supporting the man’s next of kin.”
