Taxi drivers at Temple Meads protest and refuse to pick passengers up after row with Network Rail

Taxi drivers at Bristol's busiest station refused to take any fares on Monday morning over a dispute about driver numbers.

A sign outside Temple Meads on Monday morning warned commuters of disruption

Taxi drivers at Bristol's busiest station refused to take any fares on Monday morning over a dispute about driver numbers.

Commuters arrived at Temple Meads this morning to find few taxis were willing to pick them up at the rank outside the station.

The protest will be lasting from 8am to 11am on Monday, December 1.

It comes after an argument between the drivers and Network Rail, who issue their permits to use taxis.

Network Rail currently allow 400 drivers to use Temple Meads as a pick-up point, but there is only space on the forecourt for 46 cars. Now, Network Rail have allegedly decided to start taking away the licences of some drivers, to reduce congestion around the station.

Driver Tim Lloyd said: "Drivers pay £450 a year to use Temple Meads station, but now we are living with the threat of going into work and having our licences taken away.

"It does get congested on the forecourt leading up to the station. The big London trains which arrive every half an hour usually work us all out, and it is coming up to the busy time of year.

"We had a meeting with Network Rail last week, and our proposal to solve the problem is to have an overflow rank slightly away from the main one, where we can park up and wait."

The overflow rank would be on the left-hand side of the station, as you drive down to the main road.

But Network Rail dismissed the proposal, and are instead reducing the number of people who can work there.

Mr Lloyd added that he apologized for any inconvenience caused to the public while the protest was being staged.

Some would say that paying less than £1.25 a day for a station permit was a bargain for the work they get. I don't fall into that category. they are looking into a permit scheme at our station. Some idiots will pay the money. We have about 30 trains a day here from around 06.00 until 22.30 but because the 2 main trains every hour arrive at the same time that cuts it down to around 15 chances for a fare.

and of course Taxi drivers are assisting the Rail company's be servicing their Stations ,,,,,,,,,,,in my book the rail company's should supply adequate ranking facilities as negotiated with the Taxi trade reps and of course Toilet washing facilities free of charge along with DISCOUNTED access to refreshment outlets at ALL Stations.

Well compared to york station it is a bargain, if i want to go in the station i have to have a station taxis radio in the car, paint my car from silver to black, and the best bit i have to pay £90 a week for the privilege, oh and i have to buy a station taxis badge for £250 a year i like many others tell them to stick it where the sun doesn't shine, all this has lead to record queues of customers when will the train companies see this is a short term gain that [edited by admin] people off.

Bristol Temple Meads: 'Bear with' crowded conditions, says Network Rail

Network Rail has asked Bristol’s train commuters to “bear with” the cramped conditions at Temple Meads while facilities at the station are updated.

After a row with taxi drivers earlier this week, Network Rail said the station was on a slow and steady journey to redevelopment.

Taxi drivers at Temple Meads went on strike on Monday over what they claimed was a threat to their livelihoods.

Cabbies feared Network Rail would take away their permits to pick up passengers at the station, after it emerged the huge numbers of taxis were causing chaos on the forecourt. A Network Rail spokesman said some drivers had been using the short-stay car park as a rank to wait for fares, and were making it hard for passengers using the railway to use it to drop off or pick up friends and family. This is in breach of the terms of their permits.

He said: “A small number of the drivers staged a protest at the start of the week which caused some delays to passengers using the station. We are sorry this situation has developed in the way it has but want to assure passengers using Temple Meads that they remain our number one priority.

“We will continue to talk to the drivers about resolving the legitimate concerns they have about the space set aside for their cabs and have already taken a number of steps to improve the situation, including putting a stop on any new permits being issued to create more space in the taxi rank.

“Our aim is always to offer the best possible service to our passengers, which in this instance means ensuring that the parking bays are available exclusively for their use.

“More widely, our investment in this part of the rail network will mean significant improvements for commuters and the growing city of Bristol.

"Looking to the future, we have an aspiration with Bristol City Council and our other partners to redevelop the station and its surrounding area to improve its facilities and contribute towards economic growth in the city by transforming it into a place where businesses can grow and thrive.

"All of this investment means it is an exciting time for Bristol and for Temple Meads and a dispute over spaces for our taxi drivers should not be allowed to detract from that. To those who use the station every day I would ask that you bear with the sometimes crowded surroundings.”

Improvements lined up

Work is currently ongoing to double the number of railway lines between the city’s two main stations, which started this month. It will enable more services to run between Temple Meads and Parkway, and reduce journey times.
The arrival of electrification by 2017 will also introduce a new fleet of longer, faster, quieter and greener electric trains, designed to improve travelling experiences, and bring the time taken to travel to London down to below an hour and a half.
When electric trains arrive, Temple Meads station will also be partially redesigned. Many are hoping this will result in more room for traffic and public transport.
