I thought that but thinking about it, if you look on the job websites, they are always advertising for van drivers. With what experience they have some may do their Class 1/2 license.
I'm sure some will end up on the Taxis thou

Or they may get their own van and become self employed delivery drivers.

I suspect they were doing the vans cos they couldn't hack the cabs in the first place.

Those parcels will still need delivering so one would assume others will employ them.

My guess is that this is the way to get rid of the drivers as employees. They will end up as self employed contractors.

Most were already self employed just like DHL and BusinessPost

pulling the plug just as payments to owner drivers were due is par for the course, Heleman's did it right on payday years ago after quietly parting the company int 3 different companies, then moving the funds away from parcels and then pulling the plug, the owner drivers were on 90 day terms, 3 months of invoices.....gone. Concord/NCN did the same

I just avoided them owing me anything

They already are self employed drivers.

The news stated that they employ 2727 people and mass redundancies are expected in the next few days.

They were probably the office and warehouse staff, parcel firms prefer S/E owner drivers cos they work longer hours, and stand the vehicle costs themselves, as I say, I was in at Businesspost with upto 3 vans+drivers years ago at £150/day, I also did Hellman's, NCN and Concord but got out by the skin of my teeth, I even had to take Businesspost to court fot £3000 they witheld without reason (new manager disliked paying a half day rate for not using a van+driver id sent in ay 6am)

Stefan Thorrington in Exeter, Devon

I have five vans in City Link colours and five drivers who have all been working flat-out up until Christmas Eve to make sure everything was delivered.

We didn't have any warning about this whatsoever - drivers even knew which routes they were going to cover on Saturday.

Last night I was pondering what to do. None of the managers at the depot knew about this - they were under a lot of pressure to deliver everything by Wednesday.

However, I do think someone must have known what was going on.

I don't know what's going to happen now. The main question is do I get paid?
line

Paul Horner, Kirkcaldy

I'm a sub-contractor at a local City Link depot in Fife and have been there for three years. I'm totally and utterly gutted.

This has happened after they spent money on new uniforms and new scanners.

Everyone thought we had turned a corner and things would be getting a lot better, but obviously not.

I found out on Christmas Day. I'm still pretty numb. I've just told my fiancée (I couldn't bring myself to tell her yesterday). She's distraught.

I just hope I get paid at the end of the month (you wont pal, trust me) because, like all the other sub-contractors, I need money to live on, to pay for the van and the diesel.

Irfan Khan, Beckton, London

We have 20 drivers and a fleet of vans that need paying up. We have probably lost £70,000 in unpaid invoices.

We haven't got the capital to pay it so we'll probably sell the vans, and the drivers probably won't get paid.

We just don't know what's going to happen.

We've worked until midnight nearly every day last week up to Christmas.

I have not slept since finding out, I've been going crazy.

Simon Judd, Essex

I'm a sub-contractor with City Link, now find I have a liveried van and no work.

I doubt if I'll get paid for my last two weeks' work, nearly £2,000.

They've got rid of most employed drivers at my depot, and presumably nationwide. Just have to hope I can find some work elsewhere, after getting the van made white!

I worked for the company for eight or nine years but recently became a self-employed driver for them.

Most drivers at this depot are self-employed, so I don't know about the figure of 2,727 people, it depends how they're counted.

The parcels game is om its knees, Hermes closed its national hub and routes through regional depots whilst collecting and delivering a parcel for £2.50, and they use car drivers or any old van someone can supply for work at 30p a drop

If they are employees then they will get 90 days redundancy pay.
