Caernarfon taxi driver fined more than £500 for fly-tipping at Llanberis beauty spot Darren Wyn Dooley dumped a large quantity of household waste near Padarn Country Park
A taxi driver has been fined more than £500 for dumping household rubbish at a beauty spot.
Darren Wyn Dooley, of Lon Arfon, Caernarfon pleaded guilty at the town’s magistrates court to fly tipping the waste without an environmental permit in an area of woodland opposite Fachwen Car Park, Llanberis last year.
The large quantity of waste was discovered by a man walking past Fachwen, which is next to the 800 acre Padarn Country Park, a site of special scientific interest.
The man reported the find to Gwynedd Council, who cleaned the area up, and photographed and examined the contents of the waste which they initially believed had been dumped by the defendant’s mother Yvonne.
Two environmental officers from the council went to the family house and after initially questioning Mrs Dooley, her son, who works for Dooley’s Taxis, admitted fly-tipping, saying: “I did it.”
The council’s representing solicitor Stewart Dunn said: “As a result of fly-tipping, it costs Gwynedd Council hundreds of thousands of pounds to clear up the mess of others and needs to be disposed of properly.”
Dooley’s solicitor told the court: “He admitted the blame at the very first opportunity and had never done anything like this before.
“I hope you will consider this and take it into account.”
Dooley was ordered to pay costs amounting to £514.50, which include a Band C fine of £200 for the offence, £180 court costs, investigative and disposal costs of £114.50 and a victim surcharge of £20.
