Monitoring fuel usage is something I've never done, I fill up and that's it job done, I look at the trip in the car and that's as far as I go.

If you don't know your running costs, how do you know your profit/loss?

It's the amount stated on his fuel receipts.

That doesn't give the running cost of the vehicle.

Neither does knowing the exact mpg.

Not on it's own it doesn't but when you use that figure along with the other fixed costs and variable costs you can then work out how much it costs per mile to run your vehicle. then you can see how much profit (loss) you are making.

In 20 years, I've never needed to know the exact mpg I'm getting. I have a fair idea and anything beyond minor changes would be noticed. (I'm the only one driving it.)
All costs are recorded as an amount of pounds and pence. Profit/loss is worked out on that basis.

Simple, I might take £1000 a week, take away £270 and £110 and I'm left with £620. Pretty simple innint?

I suppose it depends whether you rent the car or you own the car. I speak as an owner.

385 miles, £52 inc £9 vat 43.65ltrs = 13.5p/mile but 100 of the 385 was in town

I did 90 miles "logged on" yesterday and took £145 = £1.61 a mile

I'm the same

I brim it at the end of every shift, I brim it at the end of the next shift and so on. If I've done 200 miles and it takes £35 of Nitro to fill it back up what's the problem?

When I owned my own I never number crunched the miles, I just filled it up at the end of every shift.

That does not give you your running costs at all, but if you think it does then who am I to argue.
