Woman tried to pay taxi fare with toy car

A LAMPETER woman who refused to pay a £40 taxi fare she’d agreed with the driver became concerned when she saw the meter go over £40, her solicitor has said.

Diane Lees, of Flat 1, 20 College Street, admitted making off without paying when she refused to pay the taxi driver after he drove her home from Aberystwyth on 31 March.

Prosecutor Rhys Thomas said Lees, 46, and the taxi driver had agreed a fare of £40 for the journey before set-ting off, but the driver said he had to put the meter on for health and safety reasons.

However, Lees became agitated when she saw the meter move past the £40 mark and started becoming concerned, despite the driver’s saying the fare would be £40.

When they stopped, Lees went into her flat saying she was going to get the money, but went back with a rem ote control car and asked the driver if he would take it as payment.

When he rejected it, Lees returned to her flat and did not return, leading to the driver phoning the police.

Defence solicitor Iestyn Davies said Lees, who he described as an “eccentric”, was usually very charming, but said she is an alcoholic and suffers from anxiety issues at times.

He said that she had been confused when the meter moved past £40 despite the agreed fee and that had led to the problem.

Mr Davies said Lees had been out of trouble for more than two years which was an achievement considering her previous record, and said the inc ident was a “blip”.

Lees was ordered to pay a fine of £40, compensation to the taxi driver of £40 and costs totalling £105.
