Up to 80 trainee Delta drivers face unemployment because Liverpool council ‘does not recognise training scheme’

Cabbie and dad-of-three Chris James, 35, says situation will leave him on scrapheap after training licence expires

Up to 80 trainee cab drivers working for taxi firm Delta could find themselves unemployed because Liverpool council refuses to recognise the company’s training programme.

Sefton-based Delta was granted a private operator’s licence by the city council in November last year.

But the firm’s driver training scheme is not acknowledged by Liverpool council – meaning Delta’s newest recruits are currently unable to earn their full private hire licence in the city.

Dad-of-three Chris James, 35, from Seacombe, who began working for Delta last November, said: “This easily affects about 80 of us. Liverpool city council is basically stopping us from working.

“This will leave me in a position where I can’t work after my badge expires in a couple of months time. We’re just in limbo and there’s nothing we can do.

“We physically won’t be allowed to work in Liverpool and no other taxi company will take us on.”

He added: “I’ve got three kids and one of them is disabled. I’ve also got my wife to look after and my house to pay for. I’m very worried.”

Liverpool council says it does not currently recognise Delta’s training scheme, provided by an external agency called Antrec, although the authority is currently reviewing its list of approved taxi driver training programmes.

Private hire licences in Liverpool are earned in two phases – firstly, by enrolling on a course with an approved training provider for a year; secondly, by converting this into a full permit after 12 months and passing ‘the knowledge’.

According to Mr James, any Liverpool-registered Delta driver who currently only has a one-year training licence faces being thrown onto the scrapheap when this expires because the city council will not recognise the full Antrec private hire qualification.

A council spokesman said: “Private hire drivers have to go through an approved training provider. Delta’s training is provided by Antrec, which is not on our list of approved providers.

“At the moment we are reviewing this and other aspects of training provision.”

Wouldn't it have made sense for Delta to train those drivers on an authorised course?

Or is that just too f***ing simple? :?
