Hi. Had my eye off the ball with Uber recently. Just noticed if you are a Hackney driver in London you can sign up to uber. However that's only in London. Why can't a Hackney driver sign up from say Newcastle. If Uber have a private hire operators licence surely any hackney can join them as they could if the driver wanted to join five star or blueline taxis. I'm puzzled. Is it down to the council's?

I suspect they use hackneys elsewhere, but the difference in London is they actually allow you to choose between sections of the trade, as well as level of car.

There's about 3 available out of 25000 Taxis.

That about sums up the rush for taxi drivers to join the yank tax avoiders.

Its not difficult.

Download the passenger app and move your pin around London, then see how many of the 'hundreds' of black cabs you can find on Uber available for hire.

If you hit 2, you're doing well and most of them are suburban drivers in the Richmond sector.
