TAXIS for BBC staff and celebrity guests cost £32,000 a day last year, it was revealed yesterday.

The corporation racked up an £11.8million bill - up 3.5 per cent on the previous year's £11.4million - for cabs ordered through its central booking system.

The total bill could be higher as the £11.8million does not include taxis booked by other means.

Staff living within 30 miles of work get a taxi if they start before 6.30am or finish after 10.45pm.

Former director general Greg Dyke famously tried to ban them, introducing shuttle buses. In the year to April 2000, the bill for taxis had swelled to £13.1million.

A BBC spokesman insisted the increase was due to more people using the central booking system.

Couldn't they save money & use private hire companies ?

They do in London. I used to rank on the Beeb rank. You see more PH being used nowdays.

That will be because they pay taxibank a commission to book cars then.

And you know as well as I do many black cab drivers would be happy to do it "off the meter" for a lot less.....Victoria coach arrivals to Boston Lincs £330 on the meter I did it for £190 and very often do a deal to Gatwick, Luton or Stansted which is a hell of a lot less than Addy Lee or the Merc firms.....
