Cleveland Police refute allegations as taxi boss is cleared of dangerous driving charge

Trial of Ansear Akbar, 36, heard of a 'bitter dispute' between taxi firms Boro Cars and Blueline

A Taxi boss has been cleared by a jury of dangerous driving after a violent altercation linked to a “bitter dispute” between two firms.

Ansear Akbar, 36, a shareholder at Blueline Taxis, claimed his car was smashed up by Boro Cars boss Mohammed Bashir and associates including his sons and nephew on August 29 last year - directly before the incident for which he was charged.

Yesterday, he told a court that Mr Bashir claimed to have “had Cleveland Police in his pocket” and didn’t trust the force to investigate the alleged assault, and accused them of losing CCTV footage of him being assaulted by the same people in August 2012 on Snowden Road in Middlesbrough.

But in a statement today the force refuted those claims and said the footage “had not been lost”.

During the trial his barrister Robert Mochrie had expressed his surprise that Mr Akbar was the only person charged after the incident, and said that his defendant had gone to court “to stand up to” Mr Bashir, who he called a bully.

Mr Mochrie said the case “was a modern day David and Goliath type story” and that Mr Akbar’s distrust of Cleveland Police was understandable.

But Detective Inspector Matt Murphy-King, of Cleveland Police, said: “A full, thorough and transparent investigation was carried out into this case which resulted in one man being charged in connection with the incident.

“There were a number of others who were arrested, however, there was insufficient evidence available to be able to charge them.

“Anyone who makes a complaint to Cleveland Police will receive an impartial, thorough and professional investigation.”

In relation to the claim about lost CCTV, Det Insp Murphy-King said: “The complaint was fully investigated and it was established that CCTV had not been lost. All available CCTV had been recovered and subject to examination. This outcome was relayed to the complainant.”

A jury at Teesside Crown Court took just under an hour and a half to clear Mr Akbar.

They also found him not guilty of the lesser charge of careless driving.

The charge related to an incident on Homerton Road and Cargo Fleet Lane in Pallister Park, in which Mr Akbar said the windows of his Range Rover had been smashed by the Boro Cars “troops”, and his female passenger and his nephew, a cancer sufferer, were dragged from the car and assaulted on Homerton Road.

He admitted pursuing an Audi A5 driven by Shakeel Rashid on Cargo Fleet Lane, and accepted driving through a red light but did so as he was “panicked” after the attack.

A spokesman for Boro Cars said: “We do not recognise the hyperbolic characterisation of our business that was ventilated in court. Our business was not on trial and no charges have been brought against anyone from the company.”

Uber not interested, we are 4 very small unitary authorities. Saying all that with a population of 130,000 we currently have 1170 licenced vehicles, possibly the most per population in the country if not the world at 1 licenced vehicle per 118 people living in our town. We have just over 300 hacks, the rest are these 2 waring PH companies that charge £250 per week for each vehicle, and supplying work at just under £10 an hour (average) meaning it's totally impossible for drivers to earn anywhere close to minimum wage and most are forced to work 80-100 per week to feed their families.

We have a huge university, but because of the current mess, uber would have to charge less than 75p per mile to compete, some jobs are currently been done for less because of these waring companies.

cost of living must be high round there if they need to make £800 to £1000 a week to live also if it's that overcrowded and they can still generate enough work for the drivers to average £10 an hour it must be a buoyant market

£800 minus £250 for car insurance and radio minus fuel apx £160 based on using £2.00 of fuel an hour which is probably on the low side leaves £390 divided by 80 equals £4.875 per hour and if you chose to work less hours that hourly rate falls even further if that's how much you can earn in a buoyant market I dread to think what you would earn in a flat one.

I don't know the area myself but I would guess there's too many drivers because of lack of other opportunities and a LA that will keep issuing badge after badge as long as it's putting more shekels in the council coffers.

I probably only average £4.50 an hour that's the taxi trade across the uk. The customers have the upper hand and the plate barons are determined to compete on price with one another. Our council makes it clear that their aim is to make sure there are enough taxis so that even on the busiest night of the year nobody has to wait at the rank. They insist on their employees having a living wage but not the taxi trade

So they dont make a profit so can you explain why three year badges in lots of cases cost as much or very close to the same as three one year badges is there three times more work in issuing a three year badge, I think not even factoring in the enforcement and ongoing admin costs, also as the amount of badges issued in an area increases shouldnt economy of scale come into play causing the the individual badge renewals to fall in price slightly yet that never seems to happen.

There is a very simple answer to that question. The trade! Why are drivers in areas where this is happening not challenging the Council. Get the breakdown of the costs and scrutinise them. Take them to the district auditor, the local government Ombudsman and the press.

but the very simple answer is that he's right - and the number of drivers that will bother complaining is negligible - and before you start preaching from that pulpit of yours my friend - drivers haven't got the time of energy to do what you have (thanks to the advice you were given via tdo)

the simple answer is for the government to issue advice to councils.

you are in a position to do this - so please do it.
