Taxi driver suspended after 'reversing over nine-week-old baby's pram before LAUGHING'

Boro Taxis, based in Middlesbrough, confirmed its driver had been suspended after the driver allegedly crashed into the £400 buggy

A taxi driver has been suspended after an outraged mum claimed he reversed his car and destroyed her nine-week-old baby’s pram.

Boro Taxis, based in Middlesbrough, confirmed its driver had been suspended pending an investigation after the alleged incident on Wednesday evening.

Beth Hunter, 19, had taken the £12 journey from Middlesbrough to her sister’s house in Guisborough, with newborn daughter Polly.

She said: “I am so relieved that my baby wasn’t in the pram. I had taken her into the house, but the pram was on the pavement and when I went out I saw him reversing the car into the pram.

"It cost £400 and it is ruined. But it’s not the cost of the pram, my baby could have been in there. I can’t think about what might have happened if she was."

Beth, who lives in Park End, Middlesbrough, said she had concerns about the journey when the driver’s ID badge was not displayed in the taxi.

Regret: The taxi firm reassured Beth Hunter that they are investigating the matter

She told the Gazette: "I was worried because it seemed as though the driver was playing with his mobile phone.

"When the driver dropped me off, I paid him the fare and got my baby in the house. After I saw him reverse into my daughter’s pram he got out, but just laughed and didn’t say sorry."

Beth said she had initially been "fobbed off" when she complained about the incident in a post shared thousands of times on Facebook.

But Boro Taxis has now contacted her to confirm they will replace the pram and have launched an investigation.

A spokesman for the firm said: "The business greatly regrets the accidental damage to the pram, which will be replaced.

"The driver is currently suspended whilst we undertake a thorough investigation. The safety of our passengers is our absolute priority and we take any concerns raised about the conduct of drivers very seriously.

"We have reported the matter to Middlesbrough Council Licensing Authority, which is the regulating body responsible for undertaking checks to ensure drivers are fit and proper to be issued with a licence to act as a private hire driver.

"The driver will have the opportunity to respond to the Licensing Authority and the Police and it would not be appropriate to ventilate the matter further in public until this matter has been thoroughly looked into and the facts verified."

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: "We received a complaint of dangerous driving and damage to personal property on the evening of Wednesday September 30.

"We are making arrangements to re-contact this lady so we can take full details of what is alleged to have happened."

I assume she left the pram lying behind the taxi ? Is this possibly a case of she's kicking up a fuss because she left it where it was obstructing the drivers route back onto the road and desperate to push the blame away from herself ? That said surely the driver knew it was there after opening the boot to get it out a sensible driver would have carried it to the front door to clear the way and appear helpful in the process. Or is that a trait of all NE drivers mr Jaguar !

I'm not sure, and maybe someone could clarify it for me, but was the driver suspended as it's not clear. ](*,)

I think he has been suspended by his company and not by the Council.
