Huddersfield taxi driver Mohammed Aslam who bit one passenger is jailed after attacking another

32-year-old from Hillhouse jailed for 11 months after second assault on passenger

A taxi driver has been jailed after he assaulted another man while under a suspended sentence for biting a passenger.

Leeds Crown Court heard today that Mohammed Aslam was given the suspended sentence after he was convicted of assaulting Thomas Fletcher in November 2012 in Huddersfield.

Martin Sleight, prosecuting, said Mr Fletcher and a woman friend had got into Aslam’s taxi and during the journey the vehicle had to stop so she could be sick.

After that Aslam asked for £50 for the fare having previously agreed £5. That led to an argument between him and Mr Fletcher.

Mr Sleight said after Mr Fletcher had pushed the driver away for having his forehead close to him and thinking he was going to be assaulted, Aslam had jumped on him causing him to fall to the floor and then “bit him to his face.”

Mr Fletcher punched him to free himself but was then bitten again by the driver “under the armpit.”

He said Aslam admitted the assault but sentence was adjourned on him in February last year and before that was imposed Mr Fletcher had again gone out for the evening with friends and got into a people carrier with them outside Ex Service, the same taxi firm where Aslam worked.

He saw Aslam standing outside the office and pulled his hat down hoping not to be recognised but Aslam then spoke to their driver. As a result of that the driver told the group he had been told he could not take them home.

When they got out Aslam threatened to bite Mr Fletcher’s face again and was convicted of intimidation as well as assault and given a total of 12 months suspended for 18 months.

Mr Sleight said in March this year, Joseph Wood, 23 had gone out in Huddersfield town centre and got into a taxi. He was told the fare home would be £12 and began arguing with the driver saying it should only be £8.

“He concedes he and the driver were swearing at one another,” said Mr Sleight “This was witnessed by the defendant who opened the back door of the taxi, grabbed Mr Wood and punched him to his head.”

That caused his glasses to fall on to the floor before Aslam punched him a second time to his right ear before a group of girls intervened. Mr Wood had pain and swelling to the side of his head.

Aslam, 32, of Clara Street, Hillhouse, was found guilty by magistrates of battery to Mr Wood and being in breach of his suspended sentence. He was jailed for a total of 11 months.

Recorder Kate Tulk said she accepted he had completed his unpaid work which was imposed along with the suspended sentence and had continued with his voluntary work since which would enable a reduction in the sentence activated.

But she said his behaviour was “totally unacceptable”.

“You have not once but twice behaved inappropriately,” she said. “At some stage the penny has got to drop that his sort of behaviour will not be accepted.”
