A Belfast driver was fined a total of £450 and received six penalty points at Belfast Magistrates’ Court today. John Alexander Johnston of Chesham Crescent, Belfast was fined £75 for having no Taxi Driver’s Licence, £75 for having no Public Service Vehicle Licence, £50 for having no Taxi Operator’s Licence and £250 for having no insurance, with six penalty points also endorsed on his Driving Licence.
On 26 March 2015 a DVA Enforcement Officer requested a taxi from a bar on the Ormeau Road. A short time later Mr Johnston presented himself as a taxi driver and conveyed the officer to his destination where he charged a fare of £5.
Follow up checks completed by the officer revealed that Mr Johnston did not hold a Taxi Driver’s Licence and his vehicle was not licensed or insured for use as a Public Service Vehicle. Mr Johnston was subsequently interviewed about the matter but denied working as a taxi driver.
