Taxi boss makes desperate plea to get drunk passenger home safe

Taxi boss posted a photo of the tipsy passenger on his firm’s Facebook page to try and get him home safely

A taxi boss issued a desperate online plea to help get a sozzled passenger home after he fell fast asleep.

Jonny Helm, 26, had hailed a cab but promptly slipped into a deep slumber in the passenger seat.

When the driver failed to rouse him, his boss Ahroon Razaq posted a photo of the sleeping beauty on his firm’s Facebook page.

He wrote: “Hi there, if any one is still awake and recognises this person could you please forward an address as this male has fallen asleep in one of the taxis and the driver has not a clue where to take him. Thanks”.

Ahroon said he had called police and an ambulance before posting the photos in a bid to alert his friends and family.

Jonny had failed to give the driver his address and within seconds he was in the land of nod.

Ahroon, 42, said: “I’ve been in the taxi business for 23 years and I have never seen anything like it.

“The guy just wouldn’t budge. He was completely passed out. My driver tried to nudge him and wake him but he was totally unresponsive.

“He would wake up every now and then and just tell the driver to keep going but we didn’t know the address.

“After about half an hour my driver pulled into a garage near our office and asked me what to do. He just wasn’t budging. I genuinely feared for him.

“The ambulance couldn’t say for certain when it would arrive so I thought someone might be awake on Facebook who recognised him.

“Some people have said it’s a bit cruel or demeaning but it was a last resort. I’ve seen drunk people - I’ve had to walk some of them to their doors myself - but this was something else.”

Dad of one Jonny, from Bacup, Lancs, eventually woke up and made his own way home.

He had been out all day after watching his football team Burnley play Huddersfield on Saturday.

“I don’t go out that much any more because I’ve got an 11-month-old son” he said.

“I knew it was my last night out before Christmas and I’d been on it since about 1.30pm before the Burnley game.

“After the football I carried on drinking with my mates in Bacup and Rawtenstall and to be honest I’ve just gone too hard.

“I can’t remember getting or being in the taxi. There’s no chance of waking me either; I’m a really heavy sleeper.

“When I woke up, I just panicked and ran. I got the bus back home and woke up to hundreds of messages about the taxi firm’s post.

“It was embarrassing. I’d been getting the mickey taken loads in work but I’m not too bothered. I’m still feeling a bit delicate now.

“I suppose it’s quite funny but I do feel a bit bad. I’ll be in touch with the taxi people to apologise.”

Mr Ahroon, boss of Royal Taxis in Rossendale, added: “The journey would normally have been £12 but he owes us about £20 for the time. I’m glad he’s ok.”
