Derby cuts: Taxi drivers' anger over city council plans to cut public toilet funds

THERE should be more toilets and not fewer – especially in Derby city centre, according to taxi drivers.

Derby City Council is planning to stop funding the city’s remaining public toilets next April, of which those sited in Victoria Street are the most central. Read more about the full list of cuts here.

But taxi drivers in the city have already written to the council complaining that there are not enough toilets for themselves and their customers.

One of them, Fazal Ashraf, said: “There is no way the toilets should be axed. Families are always complaining about the situation and saying they are having to leave the city early because a child needs to go to the toilet.

“Taxi drivers, of which there are about 500 in the city, need toilets and there aren’t any. There should be toilets in all four corners of the city at least for people.

“Some people, especially the disabled, tell us they would prefer to shop in Allestree than come into Derby because there are non-council toilets there.

“We have written to the council and the Taxi Drivers Association. The council is being ridiculous.”

The proposed cuts would also affect automated toilets in Stenson Road, Nottingham Road and London Road.

A council report said the toilets were “little used”. The early termination of the automated loos would save the council £129,000 over the lifetime of the contract, with an immediate saving of £50,000 in 2016-17.
