Cardiff’s taxi marshal service could be in line for a revamp, in a bid to save £122,000.

The council say they could release revenue if they take a new approach to funding the service.

It runs in the city centre on weekends.

In September the council promoted the use of the service in the wake of three alleged sex assaults in the city centre.

Hundreds of people came forward complaining they had been refused fares which taxi drivers deemed as “too short”.

They urged people to use the service to ensure they were getting a safe journey home.

Marshals were stationed at Greyfriars Road and Lower St Mary Street from 8pm to 4am.

The budget proposals do not include any details about how the service would be funded, only that £122,000 could be saved through a restructure.

In a consultation document about the service in November 2014, the council reported that the marshals are providing a service to more than 30,000 people on an average Friday and 40,000 people on a Saturday. Those numbers increase on events days.

The report by the city centre manager said South Wales Police have heavily relied on the marshals to reduce anti-social behaviour and to assist in crowd management.

Are these marshals funded by the trade or the council?

I seem to remember a bit of a kerfuffle when they came in, or was that elsewhere?
