Liverpool taxi fare increase agreed

AN increase in Liverpool’s Hackney cab fares has been agreed.

The rise, the first in four years, followed a request from Unite the trade union which represents a number of taxi drivers in the city.

They argued that fares in Liverpool are, on average below other major cities. They also said that if fares were not increased now it would lead to a larger hike in fares at a later date.

Objections to the proposed increase were considered but it has been agreed that the increase should go ahead with immediate effect.

Councillor Steve Munby, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “We have a responsibility to be fair to both the taxi trade and to passengers. Nobody likes price increases but this is the first rise in four years and it has been kept as low as possible.

“Experience has shown that if you keep the fares down too long you end up with having to impose a very big increase. In the 1980s the fares were frozen for six years but this was followed by a rise of nearly 30%.

“There were objections from some taxi drivers and passengers and these were carefully considered but ,on balance, it has been decided that an increase in fares at this time is justified.”

People will still use blacks regardless of the fair increase. In Liverpool, the main private hire are Delta and Alpha and increasingly UBER. Delta and Alpha taxis have changed the black trade in liverpool. Previously, you had some taxis working days and some nights. The majority of the taxis where owned by Cartels, or private investors who own a number of cab and plates, and rented out the taxis. A number of cartels have gone or reduced their stock . The private investors are pulling out, because it is no longer financially viable for them. Taxi collars are available now for lease, so close to xmas. Most taxis are being driven by one driver rents 24 hours a day, sevens a week and works the busy periods only, or own the cab and plate themselves. The cabs plates are now around £22, 000. They were £55,000. the taxi trade is becoming more single owners. I have also noticed that on a saturday night, there are people queueing for taxis up to 6 am. Quite ironic, people use private hire, because they are cheaper, but on a saturday will use black cabs to get home. now less taxis on a saturday night working up till 6 am. No longer taxi drivers working nights only.

Delta, now have 2,200 drivers. I use to drive a taxi back in 2004. Delta had 2,500 drivers (all Sefton based), back then. the 2,200 they have now, 200 are Liverpool based. So what happended to the 500 driver?
