I'm coming to the conclusion that as a driver in this industry you need to have your ass well and truly covered these days as there have been plenty of examples lately of how easy it is to fall foul of mendacious members of the public combined with councils/licensing authorities who are to ready to take anyone's side but the drivers.
The operator who I pay my rent to is a member of the NPHA which I believe gives me some kind of associate benefits but is this sufficient or am I better joining a union my self and if so which one ?

THE NPHA is a proprietors organisation in effect worthless to a Driver for they are financed by the people you are likely to come into conflict with.

Captain cab will no doubt fill you in on the National Taxi Association i have met him s few times and hes honest knowledgable and passionate about the industry.

However i would always recommend a trade Union for they have not only the financial muscle but political muscle and of course vast experience of industrial conflict and normally offer FREE legal representation essential these days in my opinion!

I suspect you are a Hack Driver so therefore if your in London theres only one choice the RMT streets in front of Unite, and ignore the SCABS mob the LTDA GORMLESS AMATEURS #-o #-o

OUT OF lONDON it depends on your location the GMB organise for Hacks and are worth considering.

Unite in Liverpool seem fairly active :D

post your area i will come back to you :D and note the INCIDENT thread on here #-o #-o you are being wise in considering UNION membership =D> =D> =D>

honestly cant understand why a ph taxi driver would join a union tbh, if you gave the owners chit or anything they would just say " hand your datahead in" & your gone, & once word got around to the other offices you probably wouldn't get a job there either, they only have one system in place , there's, simple as that , & if you don't like it move to another office ( although they are all the same, money grabbing clunts that don't give a flying fook about the drivers so long as they pay there rent ) ) although, if i was a hack it could be useful for the "singular rather than the collective"

I think the benefits of being in a union are in respect of dealings with the council and/or the police.

Invest in a decent in cab CCTV with a panic button that records voice in an emergency, in our business Hack/PH it's always going to be 1 opinion over another, no Union or even circuit can defend or will defend a dispute, that all comes down to the tools of our trade, CCTV is now an important tool.

Correct I have noticed when there is an accusation against a driver the council and police seem to work on the basis of guilty till proven innocent for example suspending drivers when an allegation has yet to be proven which in effect can be a considerable financial penalty even though the driver could be completely innocent then on top of this hardship you then have to find the money to pay for your defence then at the end when your found innocent will you be compensated for lost earnings ? No chance as to your legal costs a big maybe, the sort of money this could cost you could bankrupt a lot of people.
To protect yourself against this situation a couple of quid a week seems neither here nor there.

Ps I'm in Doncaster in the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire

Ven i always admire you abruptness and yer avatar is the best on the site =D> =D>

Your points well proprietors in London wouldnt dream of blacklisting Drivers, i realise in your manor its different but in effect you proprietors are UNITING against the Drivers maybe theres a lesson there?

Besides problems with the LA and Police where the Unions legal assistance is invaluable there are frequent other issues i have cleared up easily

REMEMBER PROPRIETORS HAVE TO BE FIT AND PROPER AND ARE TERRIFIED OF AGGRESSIVE PRESS COVERAGE

So when they with hold earnings deposits from drivers one phone call informing the clunt that X Union has instructed their solicitors to take them to a Court and by the way this AFTERNOON WE are reporting you to the LA and Mayor chair of Licensing Ctte invariably led to immediate payment to the Driver, they were extremely wary of a 600000 strong organisation jumping on emm and then there was the promise of press coverage !!

Power and influence a single Driver can only dream of and all this without the Driver having to be personally involveld and still able to work.

Then of course was threats about working Dangerous hours ie you will do 6 15 hour days :D immediately we responded with reports to the authoritys and their customers asking do you feel it safe to put your employees in this company's vehicles ?  which soon bought them to heel  coupled with press releases of course from our full time press office.

Then theres the school run malarky Drivers working excessive hours, being underpaid meant we exploited our political clout with the Councils procuring the School runs,

RACIAL DISCRIMINATION ON WORK DISTRIBUTION WAS EASILY PROVEABLE USING THEIR OWN RECORDS AND WE WERE ABLE STOP THAT FREQUENTLY.

Many offices fell foul of employment ie bogus self employment regs and our legal teams mullered many of them.

There are very many issues a Union can assist with and improve the Drivers working enviroment and do theres an old saying

United you negotiate................................on your own you BEG .........................too true in my experience in the Taxi Chauffeur and PH industrys =D>

the last thing any proprietor in London wanted was me or one our team on the phone or at their door like wise in other areas with other unions and officials

ADVICE TRY IT

WARNING midlife if your based in wales do not join the GMB for they refuse to give members free legal cover #-o

signed up loads of members some years ago and they needed some legal assistance and the regional secretary a Mr Philips in my opinion a 2 bob clunt denied the GMB supplied it naturally i produced the evidence that a ALL other regions did and there was an almighty row leading to the members leaving the Union #-o Cant blame them that region is a fekking disgrace on all issues #-o Its noteworthy that its regional President is a GROVELLING LICKSPITTLE PARASITE OUT OF THE PAUL KENNY MOULD ONE S BEACRFOFT MB FEKKING E IN MY OPINION SHE'S A RIGHT NO GOOD PIECE OF WORK

DO NOT JOIN THE GROVELLING GMB WALES =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>
