Evening all, i am a new member to the sire, i have been controller in a cab office for 8 years and now i have decided I want my private hire licence, so I'm 25, diabetic (insulin controlled) and i have 1 conviction against me from 3 years and 4 months ago, I was wondering what the worst conviction someone has had and managed to get their licence

Insulin diabetics have a lot of hoops to jump through to get a license to drive assuming that is what you mean by private hire license,if so you need to discuss it with the licensing department at your Council.

I just had to show that my sugar levels were under control. Regular blood sugar monitoring is the key.

I have to meet a strict criteria which is equal to a group 2 licence standard and show that my levels are stable, got my medical on tuesday and i foresee no issues on that side, especially seeing as i have an insulin pump which makes it a bucket load easier haha.

Basically my main issue is, 3 n half years ago me and my partner were moving her stuff into our flat, she had a display knife in a sheath, we loaded it into my motor and i got pulled, the knife among other things fell out of the bag off the back seat hence my predicament, and apparentley seeing as i had no proof of ownership and where it was is a 'convenient' place for it to fall i was screwed... on a bright note i wasnt charged with offensive weapon but it was pointed bladed article. Now my boroughs guide lines say i have more chance of obtaining my licence if it has been 3+ years since the conviction... but i dont want to fork out £267 for a search fee just find out there going to tell me to foff, hence the original question

What is a £267 search fee? A dbs check is £44.00. Were you convicted in court or given a caution? A friend of mine used to do weddings in a stretched limo. He would carry a knife in the boot to cutt the ribbons off after the wedding. He was stopped whilst taking some ladies to Wimbledon and the police search found the knife. They arrested him and took him to the station. He explained what the knife was for and the accepted the explanation. He was given a caution. When he reported the issue to his Council he was put before the committee when he again explained what the knife was for and the committee excepted this and he kept his license.

One offence, provided it wasn't of a sexual nature, over three years ago shouldn't bar you from gaining a license.

Your best bet is to fill in the application form, honestly, and see where it takes you.

I was charged with possession of a pointed bladed article, recieved community payback.

Sorry my council "search fee" is £263 for a first time application and the licence fee is an extra £74, im waiting for a call back from the head down there to discuss the matter of my conviction.

What are they searching?

By the sounds of it, this is a very high price for a private hire licence

And that is more serious an offence than mere possession of a dangerous weapon.

Never accept a police caution, it stays on your record forever.

Agree,never accept a caution it is an admission of guilt.

My mate was guilty. The knife he had in the car had a blade that was longer than legally allowed. Now he could have either accepted a caution and gone on his way or he could have been held for up rto 24 hours and his customers would not have had a clue what had happened to their transport home. At the end of the 24 hour period, he would have been charged and he would have had to go all the way back to Wimbledon for a court hearing where he would have either pleaded guilty or he would have been found guilty. Either way he would still have had this on his record.
