This taxi firm will now take you anywhere across Manchester for under £3

A taxi firm is aiming to steal a march on rivals Uber in Manchester by offering rides across the city for under £3.

Gett, an on demand taxi app similar to Uber which uses licensed black cabs, is introducing a special £2.80 deal for customers travelling across the city centre from Thursday, October 20.

Bosses say the deal is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as long as they book via the firm’s app and click on the ‘Gett Promo’ icon and they pay by card.

They say an example of a journey which will qualify for the special deal includes travelling from Old Trafford to Victoria station.

The company first launched in 2010, in competition with similar apps Uber and Hailo.

Gett drivers collect customers who are registered with their mobile app.

The app allows people to hail the taxis using their phone, paying automatically from their bank accounts.

Earlier this year Gett bought long-established black cab firm Radio Taxis in a multi million pound deal, in a bid to further expand its reach.

The firm now operates in more than 70 cities across the world, and bosses say that in London more than half of black cab drivers are now running on Gett.

A statement released by Gett reads: “Gett, the global on-demand transportation and lifestyle app, is introducing £2.80 rides throughout Manchester after it was named one of the most progressive cities in the UK, with the largest tech cluster and growth outside of London.

“Gett would like to celebrate black cabs being an integral part of the digital revolution by introducing everyone to safe and comfortable travel in a licensed taxi around the city.

“Customers can book £2.80 rides via the Gett app through a special class at the top of the home screen called “Gett Promo”. There are no time restrictions on this deal, £2.80 rides are available 24/7 including weekends within central Manchester.

“Customers can simply book a black cab via the app and must add their destination and pay by card to get the £2.80 offer.

“An example of a journey that riders can take includes travelling to or from Old Trafford Football Stadium all the way across town to Victoria train station for just £2.80, anytime and day of the week.”

I wonder how many drivers will be available on the Gett App at 02.00 am in the morning or during rush hours

Is this promo available on all routes or just on certain routes that no one will use? Who is subsidising the promo rate? Is it the driver or the company?

look at los Angeles drivers are paid just 99 cents a mile whilst the two try to undercut each other If the drivers were actually employed and on a wage they wouldn't do it

I use the Gett app and they are 100% behind the black cab trade and welfare, these promotions are mainly aimed at keeping Uber at bay. They do £5 rides occasionally in Edinburgh , It is within a general a to b within the city belt. And has to be an a to b journey no multi pick ups drop offs. As soon as you (driver) picks up your jobs timed and you get paid at 45p per minute so these can work out very nicely in rush hour.

That seems to answer my question then. Thank you.

That's what I said to a woman this afternoon, she was harping on about the price when I told her to catch a bus if she wasn't happy.

But is the answer to undercut the likes of Uber?

I think judging by Edinburgh anyway the answer will lie in the Uber experience alone.

i did it once few yrs ago about a row on mistakenly priced job by my operator ( job worth £25 he priced as £17 coz wrong postcode) so i told them exactly the same... and it started, they rushed back to the office starting complain and told them that i wanted £35 for that job (which was bollocks)... but i was almost sacked for that, only good point was that op priced that wrongly... since then they`re checking all complains of the same sort very clearly...
