Taxi driver taking children to school arrested after testing positive for drugs

The driver was collecting children to take them to school when arrested

A taxi driver who was on his way to collect children and take them to school has been arrested after testing positive for drugs.

During a police road safety operation on Thursday morning, officers checked school bus drivers and taxi drivers around the Caernarfon area in Gwynedd.

As part of the operation a 41-year-old taxi driver, who was checked in Llanrug, tested positive for cannabis after failing the roadside drugs swipe test and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

He has since been released on police bail pending the results of further tests.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: "At the time the driver was in the process of collecting children to take them to a school in Bangor."

The operation was carried out jointly between North Wales Police and the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency).

On Thursday afternoon officers moved their operation to the Dalar Hir weighbridge on Anglesey where wagons and light goods vehicles were stopped.

A total of £2,600 was collected in fines from offences including speeding, overloaded vehicles, tachograph offences, defective tyres and lights.

PC Nicholas Power, from the North Wales Police Commercial Vehicle Unit, said: “These operations will continue and we, once again, urge the motoring public to ensure their lights and tyres are in full working order before commencing their journey.

“With the nights now drawing in it is more important than ever to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy.”
