659 Taxis enters administration

Well-known York taxi firm goes into administration

ONE of York's biggest taxi or private hire companies has gone into administration.

Six Five Nine Cars Ltd in Layerthorpe, which trades as 659 Taxis, is continuing to trade while a buyer is sought.

Rob Sadler and Dave Broadbent, of the York business recovery practice Begbies Traynor, were appointed as joint administrators after a hearing at Leeds county court last Friday.

They said the business had traded in York for over 15 years and had one of the largest fleets of private hire vehicles in the city.

"All 10 support staff have retained their jobs, along with the drivers all of whom are self-employed," said a spokeswoman.

Joint administrator Rob Sadler said: “Unfortunately, the business has recently suffered from management issues and cash flow problems.

"This led to a creditor asking the court to put the company into administration.

“However, it is very much business as usual for customers, staff and drivers.

"We have already received inquiries from a number of interested parties and we are confident that we will be able to find a buyer for the business as a going concern, so delivering the best return possible for creditors.”

A man has told The Press he was one of at least eight drivers who had left 659 since the firm went into administration. He said he had moved to a new taxi firm in the city and would start work this week.

"With Christmas coming up, drivers want security," he said.

He said he and other drivers had been aware ibn recent months that the firm was in financial difficulties and some had already left before the administration.

The man said he and other drivers feared they would be out of pocket to the tune of about £200 each from work they had carried out on account, for example for restaurants and other businesses. They were paid in arrears for this work, effectively making them creditors.

They might also face costs in switching to different communications equipment, he added.

I struggle to fathom out how a PH firm can go bust.

Unless the drivers have left them, and in that case they deserve to go bust.
