OK, on from what i said in the auriga thread ( don't know what it was in there for) about our 8 year age limit proposal.

Our anti age rule councillor said that it would be bad for safety because it would encourage us to run cheap write ofs including cut and shuts and also that newer more basic cars are less safe than old executive cars that would not be allowed bythe age rule.

Any comments.

Well that man is talking out of his bum.

The council could quite simply stop cut and shuts being licensed. I'm surprised that any do in the first place.

As for older cars being more safe, well please refer to my first sentence. Most of the new cars are made specifically to do well in the Euro Star safety test. The top score is five, and I very much doubt any of the older cars would get higher than a one.

However if he is concerned about the older executive cars, then why not allow then to be used, if they can pass a stiff council test, say every three months. However the chances of them passing the new emissions tests, are in my view slim.

I don't think there are cut and shuts, he was just tyring to scarmonger about it.

There are write ofs that have been bought and tarted up again for the test and there seems to be nothing illegal about this as long as its not the worst kind of write ofs. I think theres a grading system.

As for the safety thats what i thought. there arent many twelve year old cars have air bags and side bars whether or not its an executive car.

Good point about the emmissions though. No one has raised that.

But the word is the age rule is to be delayed because we did not get enough notice, we only had until september 2004

Im not so sure about vehicle age limits. But we could do with some drivers age limit.
And as for there emmissions.

the car refered to as a cut and shut was in fact an insurance writeoffdue to econnomic repair factors. Not because it was bent in two with its petrol tank in the glove box. I wish people would get their facts right before they bleet.

Surely if it's not viable to be repaired, it shouldn't be viable to be licensed.

With stories like that, it's no wonder our trade gets such a bad press.

I wish people would get there fact's straight.

I see the St Andrews driver who killed his passenger and got off without even a fine may be getting a bit more as his case was appealed from the sherif court and the report is in tuesdays courier.

Just maybe, there is a Halcrow-Fox survey that says there is. Usually they seem to say what the council want. So, I presume, if I commissioned such a survey, it would say that there is significant unmet demand for my opinion.

Either way, tough luck, you are gonna get it anyway.

Maybe we should adopt a restricted numbers policy on the number of posts.

Then there definitely will be latent/supressed demand.

Then we can ask the OFT to study whether restricting the number of posts is in the interests of forum users.

Then the OFT will rubbish our methodology used for deciding restricted numbers, but at the same time commission us to do a study to support their conclusions.
