Nurse jailed for falsely accusing taxi driver of trying to rape her loses bid for freedom

Fiona Scanlan was sent down for 13 months in December but asked to be released pending a potential appeal against her sentence.

A nurse jailed for falsely accusing a taxi driver of trying to rape her lost her bid for freedom yesterday.

Fiona Scanlan was sent down for 13 months in December but asked to be released pending a potential appeal against her sentence.

But Lord Turnbull rejected the move at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Scanlan, 40, of Rutherglen, near Glasgow, was jailed after lying that she was attacked after leaving a wedding drunk in East Kilbride in March 2014.

Her lie led to innocent driver William Millar being held for 18 hours and having a medical examination.

She claimed William pulled into a secluded area and tried to rape her as he drove her home from a wedding at East Kilbride’s Crutherland House Hotel in March 2014.

But a GPS tracking device fixed to his taxi showed police that the vehicle did not take the route she described and proved his innocence.

William had been called to Crutherland House at midnight and watched as a drunken Scanlan was carried out.

He later asked her to leave his taxi after she launched a drunken tirade against him as he drove her home.

Scanlan then went to a police station claiming William had attacked her in the car.

While he was held in custody and questioned over the accusation, his trousers and jacket were taken for forensic tests. His taxi was impounded to check for any possible DNA evidence.

Scanlan, from Rutherglen, near Glasgow, admitted fabricating the claim when she appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

William said the prison sentence was not long enough and described what happened to him as one of the most embarrassing things in his life.

Jailed nurse who falsely accused taxi driver of rape banned by health watchdogs

Fiona Scanlan been given temporary 18-month ban by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and is expected to be struck from their register when she is released from prison.

A nurse jailed for falsely accusing a taxi driver of rape has been given an 18-month ban by watchdogs.

And the Nursing and Midwifery Council are expected to permanently strike Fiona Scanlan from their register when she is released from prison.

Bosses at the regulatory body imposed a temporary ban pending a full disciplinary hearing into the shamed health worker.

Investigators could not launch an inquiry into Scanlan’s conduct until criminal proceedings against her had been concluded.

The 40-year-old is also accused of giving vulnerable patients the wrong medication at care centres in Glasgow and Lanarkshire between May and December last year.

The drugs allegations came to light in January after Scanlan was reported by a nursing agency where she worked.

A tribunal hearing will not take place until Scanlan, who was given a 13-month jail sentence last December, is freed. She is due for early release in June but could be allowed out earlier if she agrees to be tagged.

The NMC imposed a temporary ban on Scanlan to stop her getting work after she is released from prison.

An NMC spokesman said: “An interim suspension order for 18 months was granted on February 24. As there is an ongoing investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

Scanlan first registered as a nurse in 2002 and is also believed to have worked in Australia.

A trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that taxi driver William Millar was arrested and held in custody after she made false rape claims against him.

She said he pulled into a secluded area and tried to rape her as he drove her home from a wedding at East Kilbride’s Crutherland House Hotel in March 2014. But a GPS tracking device fixed to his taxi showed the vehicle didn’t take the route she described and proved his innocence.

Scanlan, from Rutherglen, near Glasgow, admitted fabricating the claim when she appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last November.

Sheriff John McCormick criticised Scanlan and said her behaviour could make it harder to prosecute rape cases.
