No idea what this is. Firstly I thought the battery was on the way out because it had trouble turning over, then just now, I go to start it with my charger (200amp engine start mode) across the battery and all I get is the sound of the starter whirring/spinning.

The starter is 6 months old and there's already a new earth strap.

Any ideas? Could it not be making contact with the flywheel? Lost all it's teeth? Or is there something else I should look at?

Sounds to me as though the solenoid is working but it's not throwing the shaft out.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. It sounds like it spins fine, but just not engaging, which makes me think the solenoid isn't popping it out.

It is difficult to remove? I seem to remember something about removing the bolts for the oil cooler and swinging it out the way? Is the starter then difficult to get out?

Just wanted to say x-ray was bang on the money. The solenoid stopped throwing the shaft out. Got a new starter and all good.

I had to give up trying to replace the starter myself though - I have no idea how the f#ck you're mean to get to the top bolt on the starter to unmount it. It's tighter than a duck's....
