Burton taxi driver denies allegedly stealing £16,900 from pensioner in Uttoxeter

A taxi driver is set to face a trial by jury after pleading not guilty to an allegation that he stole nearly £17,000 from a pensioner in Uttoxeter. Ghulam Abbas, 56, appeared yesterday, August 15, at North Staffordshire Justice Centre, in Newcastle Under Lyme, to answer a charge of theft.

It is alleged the Burton resident stole £16,900 from an 85-year-old Uttoxeter woman between March 1 and November 23 last year. Abbas, of South Uxbridge Street, denied the allegation and his case has been committed to Stoke on Trent Crown Court, where it will now be heard.

The defendant will stand trial before a judge and jury on Friday, September 15. He is subject to conditional bail until he next appears in court. Magistrates told Mr Abbas he could not contact the alleged victim, directly or indirectly, before his trial as part of his bail.
