Passenger who claims taxi drivers attacked him was 'nasty' and 'aggressive'

A MAN who refused to pay a taxi fare and allegedly ended up in a brawl outside an Oxfordshire hotel was ‘nasty’ and ‘aggressive’, a court has heard. Taxi drivers Robert Simons, 34, of Panters Road, Cholsey, Robert Haydon, 53, of Bourton Close, Witney, and Samantha Mundy, 31, of Gassons Way, Lechlade-on-Thames, each deny one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Mundy and Haydon also each deny a count of perverting the course of justice by making a false statement to police resulting in the arrest of the alleged victim. The alleged attack on passenger Kevin Headley is alleged to have taken place outside of the Churchill Court Hotel car park in Long Hanborough in the early hours of June 5 last year.

As the trial continued at Oxford Crown Court yesterday the owner of Damo’s Taxis, Damian McClure took to the witness box, in defence of the three taxi drivers. He said: “I gave a price of £35. We are a Witney-based company so have to cover our costs of coming out to Long Hanborough. We agreed the price with the customer [Mr Headley[.”

At first it seemed like a ‘normal job’ he told the court, before he said Headley, became aggressive and refused to pay up. He added: “I heard a distressed lady [Mundy] over the radio basically saying the guy didn’t want to pay. The guy was refusing to pay, I reminded him that it was criminal and that I informed him the cost before. “He was being really nasty to my employee.”

He said the other drivers only joined the scene to look after Mundy. The prosecution maintains that the drivers worked together to beat up Mr Headley. The trial continues.

I'm sure he hasn't as the driver is probably self employed as far as the inland revenue is concerned
