Uber boss to hold talks with Transport for London next week

Uber’s new chief executive will fly to London next week to meet with the transport commissioner for talks over the withdrawal of Uber’s licence in the capital. Dara Khosrowshahi, who took over the top job last month, is meeting transport commissioner Mike Brown on Tuesday as the ride-hailing service seeks to “make things right” in one of its biggest markets.

The move, which Transport for London (TfL) said was instigated by an approach from Uber, comes days after Mr Khosrowshahi wrote an open apology to Londoners, saying “we have got things wrong”. It also comes just hours after Prime Minister Theresa May said last week’s decision to stop Uber operating in London had “damaged lives” and put 40,000 jobs at risk. Mrs May added that the decision was “disproportionate” and had “damaged the lives” of 3.5m Uber users.

An Uber spokesperson said: “Our new CEO is looking forward to meeting with the Commissioner next week. As he said on Monday, we want to work with London to make things right.” London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who is the chairman of TfL, said “it would have been “wrong for TfL to have renewed Uber’s licence if they had concerns about Uber being a fit and proper operator.”

Mr Khosrowshahi, the former chief executive of Expedia, has been tasked with fixing Uber’s corporate culture and repairing the company’s image following a string of scandals. In his apology he admitted that Uber, which is appealing the decision, must change after it was deemed as having “a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications”.

Uber’s licence in London expires on Saturday, but it will be able to operate in the city during the appeal.

A Transport for London spokesman said: "Following an approach from Uber, and at the mayor’s request, London’s Transport Commissioner will meet with Uber’s global CEO in London next Tuesday.” The announcement comes as Uber rival Addison Lee launched a campaign to hire around 1,000 new drivers. The company said "increased corporate and peak demand" was behind the move. Of the new recruits, 900 will join the Addison Lee fleet while around 100 will join Tristar, the upmarket taxi company it bought last year.

Hope they check his credentials to ensure he is not a fake as they are using it would appear fake drivers in a program.

Prescient words. Ms Bertram obviously took your remarks to heart and has left Uber:

Uber's boss in London to leave firm

Uber's London-based head of northern Europe affairs, is leaving the company at a critical moment for the company as it fights to have its London licence renewed.

In an email to staff Jo Bertram said "I've decided to move on to something new and exciting."

Uber says her departure is not connected with recent events.

The ride hailing firm's London licence expired on Saturday after it was deemed "unfit" to run a taxi service.

Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi is due to meet Transport for London commissioner Mike Brown on Tuesday for talks.

Uber's drivers can continue to operate in the capital while the firm pursues an appeal against the decision from the regulator, Transport for London.

TfL was critical of Uber's record over reporting criminal offences and carrying out driver background checks.

Ms Bertram, has been with the company for four years and oversaw its major expansion in London.

Sources at the firm insist she had been planning to leave for a new role at another organisation for a while.

Ms Bertram says in her email: "Given some of our current challenges, I'm also convinced that now is the right time to have a change of face, and to hand over to someone who will be here for the long haul and take us into the next phase."

lets not forget - the uber situation was aided by greedy PH operators who are and were in many respects far worse than existing PH operators - it was the LPHCA that pushed for the deregulation act - Uber merely was in a position to exploit the greed of others far easier.

Oh and it was the LPHCA's agm this past week, full of the usual suspects.

Is this another case of jumping ship in case the lies that have been told result in a criminal court case.

I'm interested how this pans out, in respect of getting a new license or renewing outside of the court process.

As it stands Uber have lost their license as they have been deemed to be not fit and proper. Clearly they have the right to appeal.

However until that appeal process finishes I can't see how the existing management can get a new license.

They can't promise the earth on the existing license as that has ended, and IMO only a court can tell TfL to re-license.

Or TfL could concede they were wrong to deem Uber not to be fit and proper.

Can't see how TfL can do that, as that would mean TfL made a mistake, and have admitted to making a mistake.

Not sure TfL would be legally advised to do that even if that actually believed that to be the case.

So I watch with added interest as to how this is resolved, if it happens, outside of the court process.
