Police officers and paramedics were called to the incident at the junction of Lagos Street and Corporation street shortly before 8pm on Saturday night.
The injured man was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to the Major Injuries Unit at Southmead Hospital.
A passer-by who saw the immediate aftermath of the incident told the Adver that he saw a man lying on the ground with what appeared to be a serious head injury.
The witness, who did not wish to be named, said: "He looked like he was badly hurt. It was a very scary incident, I was distraught and in shock."
Corporation Street was sealed off for much of Saturday night following the incident.
Pedestrian knocked down by taxi dies
Crime scene tape was stretch across the road and across adjoining side streets while specialist collision investigators worked to gather evidence from around the taxi.
Residents and shopkeepers from nearby stores looked on, shocked by the incident that had occurred just outside.
The road remained closed as of 11pm on Saturday evening but was reopened by Sunday morning.
A spokesman for the Roads Policing Unit at Wiltshire Police has appealed for anyone who with information about the crash to come forward.
She said: "At about 7.44pm on Saturday, a serious road traffic collision occurred at the junction of Lagos Street and Corporation Street in Swindon. Involved in the collision was a Peugeot 5008 and a pedestrian.
"The pedestrian was seriously injured and taken to Southmead Hospital."
