Is this possible?

My council has a mixed fleet policy for Hackneys, I have been told by the LO that there is "no mechanism for designating a rank for the exclusive use of Wheelchair Accessible vehicles"

Is this true?

Does anyone know of any councils with a mixed fleet policy that has WAV only ranks?

Why would you want segregated RANKS,it is hard enough to just get a RANK where the trade want it.

you cant keep a hack off a rank.... if its a proper council rank

personally id keep the WAV's off the rank, make WAV's all PH, especially as we have no tariff extra for +4 people above the 20p/person, so id want PH 8 seaters not hacks

Carlisle tried that. Ask captain Cab how that panned out.

Of course your council could dump the mixed fleet for WAV only, and the problem would be solved.

Many of our WAV's have school runs, not all, but many.

I and others get calls from Wheelchair users, wanting/needing a taxi, our PH companies always just say they don't have any available, real reason is they are too cheap and no PH drivers will do a wav at the current fares.
Our problem is our hack ranks are long and usually 1 fare an hour if we're lucky, Not many WAV's will wait in a rank for 3/4 hour just to pull off to drive 3-4 mile to do a 1-2 mile job to the doctors/chemist etc, then get in the back of the queue again = 1, short job in 2 hours instead of 2 jobs in 2 hours.
So WAV's are hit, Customers relying on WAV's can't get them and end up housebound.

Cure is one rank that is exclusive to WAV's which with our own publicity would become popular with others who don't need a WAV but sympathetic to the problems for people that do, that hopefully would encourage more drivers to consider a WAV thus helping fix the problems for our WAV reliant customers.

Then that would inconvenience others that are genuinely are unable to climb into a WAV.

When the council were forced to allow saloons onto the formerly WAV only rank it led to a huge decrease in WAV's - the council were therefore forced to cease issuing new licenses to saloon HC's.

There was a court case where the scenario was talked about - cant quite remember what it was tho

I think you could do this on private land approved taxi ranks (with the approval of the land owner), but not on normal run of the mill ranks.

If both are licensed as hackney and pay the council for a hackney plate then you cannot discriminate

best solution is all hackney saloon with wheelchair provision by volunteer sector where the vehicles are bought out of charity funds etc.etc. ................. oh wait volunteer drivers don't want to do wav work it's too inconvenient
