Four arrested after taxi driver allegedly stabbed and had his car stolen in Gateshead

Four people have been arrested after a taxi driver was allegedly stabbed and had his car stolen in Gateshead, police have said. The seriously-injured taxi driver was found at around 2.30am on Tuesday morning with stab wounds by police, who called for paramedics to take him to hospital.

The 24-year-old remains in hospital receiving treatment, but police say his injuries aren’t thought to be life threatening. His vehicle was discovered nearby around two hours later and detectives have arrested four people in connection with the incident.

All four are still in police custody.

Officers say the alleged attack happened on Hodkins Gardens in Felling and the road remained closed at the junction with Ruskin Road on Tuesday morning. A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At around 2.30am this morning police received a report that a 24-year-old taxi driver had been assaulted on Hodkins Gardens in Felling and had his vehicle stolen. “Emergency services attended and the victim was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries that were consistent with a stabbing.

“The vehicle was located by police nearby just two hours after the incident. Officers have also arrested four people in connection with the incident. “They remain in police custody at this time and police are continuing to ask for any witnesses to the incident to contact police on 101 quoting log 67 15/05/18.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed they were called out to nearby St Alban’s Crescent by police at 2.45am. She added: “We dispatched one ambulance and took the patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.”
