No guidelines - actual law !

It covers the overall height, angle and length of the slope, where they can be placed (not within a certain distance of a junction) and their width.

I remember reading the statute a few years ago, sadly when I tried finding them again recently I couldn't.
From memory the maximum height was something like 120mm. The rules are for 'humps' and not 'cushions' - the very wide version.

OOh, found them -

I think every hump round here exceeds the 100mm height allowed !

so by putting individual humps 1 per lane they avoid the rules...

Not sure. The ones in your photo I think are called 'bus cushions', there probably are rules covering their size etc. They're designed so busses can go over them with a wheel each side and not be 'bumped' !

Humps are the ones going across the full width of the road but very narrow. Cushions go across the full width of road but are a few feet across and flat topped.

I'm sure the ones that have a pothole either side of them are illegal. I seem to be getting through springs on a monthly basis.

The worst humps are at Cardiff airport, try going over them with 4 passengers and luggage.

I actually had the back ripped off a Routemaster bus on a speed hump in Gypsy Hill south London abut 15 years ago. I was only dong about 3mph at the time. got a load of insurance form Lambeth council too. My surveyor came up with the law, measured the hump and it was illegal height. since then they've done nothing about it. Maybe someone would like to do an FOI to see how much more insurance they've paid out.

I look for the grooves across the top of the hump, i reckon if theres none its probably safe, if it got 10 grooves from previous cars ass dragging or losing exhausts its one to avoid
