Diabetes Mellitus: assessing fitness to drive.

This informs you on what you need to do when on medication other than insulin to control diabetes.

Hiya Charlie. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 8 months ago but four weeks back I was told I am now clear, so you can turn it around. Just lose weight, give up sugar and be very careful what you eat. There was an extremely informative programme on the tv not so long ago explaining how you can reverse diabetes. Unfortunately can't remember what it was called but it may still be available on catch up telly.
Glad to see you're still up and about and don't let the b*****ds get you down.

I am on a very strange diet to control my diabetes and lose weight. I eat a tin of baked beans for breakfast, a tin of tomato soup for lunch and a salad for tea. I have either smoked mackerel, tuna or chicken with the salad. If I fancy a change I may have cornflakes for breakfast or kippers for lunch. I eat quite a lot of fruit as well. For drinks I have tea or coffee with the occasional diet cola. I also drink quite a bit of tomato juice with Worcester sauce.
My sugar levels have dropped a lot and I am losing weight gradually.

Sounds very fishy that. :D

What do you want to find that you can't?

Normal rules are that you can drive if Type 2 if your doctor confirms that you haven't had a recent episode, or you can show the council a set of recent clear pi** tests.

This is the basic guidance:

https://www.gov.uk/diabetes-driving

This is the more complicated version aimed more at health professionals:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/diabetes-me ... s-to-drive

There are also downloadable leaflets here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... h-diabetes

Thing to remember when reading that though is that as far as the DVLA are concerned you're a Group 1 driver - it's your local authority who specify that you have to meet the Group 2 standard, assuming they actually require that.

In a nutshell, it looks as if the most basic forms of diabetes tablets require little more than informing your council if they specify Group 2 standards, but some tablets require monitoring similar to if you're injecting insulin.
