How do they work when you have a vehicle that can work on different rates due to the number of passengers? For example if we are using an 8 seat vehicle in the daytime and we have 1-4 passengers it is rate 1 but if we have 5-8 passengers it is rate 3. how does the meter know?

We have them down here and they work well, apart from the thieves who press the multi seater tariff when they shouldn't.[/quote]

So in effect then they're no better than non-calender meters, because the driver can select the wrong tariff just as easily?

Partly.

Four seaters have no option to upgrade to multi-seaters, so once the meter is sealed the rate will come up automatically, be that day rate, night rate, Sunday rate, bank holiday rate, Xmas and New Year.

Multi-seaters have the option to change the 1-4 rate to the 5-8 rate, but not change to holiday or night rate.

Always interested in the fact that up here there's no tariff incentive at all to run the bigger vehicles (not even extras for additional passengers) yet suspect we have quite a high proportion of such taxis for an area in which all licences allow saloon cars - I'd guess a quarter to a third are eight-seaters.

Of course, they do tend to charge a bit more for off-meter and airport runs etc, but that's nothing to do with the council's tariff structure.

I suppose the incentive is to jump the rank queue and get jobs quicker.

Few moons back I had a multi seater, and I f***ing hated it.

Great for the extra you get for multi seater work, but lost so many jobs for old dears that want a saloon car.
