Image: Essex PoliceWe’re teaming up with Basildon Council, Basildon Borough Hackney Carriage Association and Basildon Private Hire Association to promote treating taxi drivers fairly during nights out and inform residents how to identify licensed taxis.
On Tuesday, December 4, we launched our initiative in partnership with Basildon Council and local taxi drivers. We’re supporting taxi drivers with a zero-tolerance approach to residents being abusive towards them and/or attempting to avoid paying for their services.
Our officers have given drivers information about to how to report anti-social behaviour and are informing residents how to identify licensed taxis and licensed private hire vehicles to ensure they get home safely.
In the Basildon area, licensed taxis can be identified by the badge at the bottom of this poster:
Image: Essex PoliceAll licensed taxis will have this badge (pictured) on their car and all drivers wear photographic ID detailing their car registration plate. For more information about taxi and private hire safety, visit Basildon Council’s website and read the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Vehicle guidance.
PC Dan Hirsch from Basildon Community Policing Team said: “We’re working with Basildon Council and local taxi drivers to give a very clear message to the minority of people who misbehave in taxis; Pay your fares, don’t abuse or assault the drivers and don’t misbehave.“
Councillor Andrew Baggott, Leader of Basildon Council said “We’re pleased to be involved with this initiative. It’s important to get home safely over Christmas and of course, all year round.”
Mark Waller, Chairman of Basildon Borough Hackney Carriage Association said: “It’s great to have the support of the council and the police. We all have the same goal of keeping people safe.”
