Driving a new vito Hackney spec as a courtesy car at the moment. Just under £10.000 dearer to buy then the transit custom. And for 10 grand MORE you get no boot space no front fog lamps no dab radio no sat nav. But you do get a merc badge though £10.000 more

Probably a better, more reliable vehicle though

Well I don’t know what year his Merc was but mine were just over £1,000 on my 2010 model. I know the new transits are closer to £300 each. Incidentally, a friend of mine has just had to have 4 new glow plugs in his transit because the DPF wasn’t getting hot enough to do a re-gen.Pig of a job to do. I’ll let you know how much when he gets his bill!

erm... i think he got mugged

glow plugs dont stay on after an engine starts and only heats the combustion chamber

town stop starts kill DPF's

Erm.... wrong.

The glowplugs are an integral part of the regeneration system as well in the Tourneo.

If just one is faulty the DPF will clog up in no time.

It is important to check the fifth injector (in the exhaust) as well, cleaned if necessary and replaced. If it is iffy then get a new one.

Wondered about the link between the glowplugs and DPF regeneration as well - normally function of glowplugs simply to start engine when cold, thus when system hot enough to regenerate the DPF then not clear what the function of the glowplugs would be (ie during a *passive* regeneration).

Had a quick Google, and it may be something to do with the *active* DPF regeneration, ie when passive regeneration isn't sufficient to clear the DPF, and extra fuel is injected into the system, which raises the temperature and so helps clear the DPF.

Seems that during this cycle the glowplugs are active to help the extra fuel ignite. Or something like that.

Anyway, if your engine doesn't get hot enough for passive regeneration (because it's only used for short trips, say) then it will need the active regeneration cycle, so if the glowplugs are faulty the regeneration won't work.

I think #-o

There is fuel injected into the exhaust stroke which is heated by the glowplugs during passive regeneration (as it carries on too long if the regeneration does not succeed tou end up with fuel in your lube oil as well).

It ignites in the exhaust and with the 5th injector as well, a temperature of over 550C is achieved which burns the soot in the DPF away.

Not a mechanic but I have been down this road. Bought a new DPF (which I didn't need) and new glowplugs and 5th injector (which I did need).

Isn't that the *active* regeneration process?

And I think it depends on the manufacturer whether there's a fifth injector?

Some manufacturers use passive regeneration.
For these vehicles passive regeneration generally takes place on the motorway where exhaust temperatures are higher. This type of system can have an integrated oxidising catalytic converter located close to the engine where exhaust gases are hot enough so that passive regeneration is possible.

Passive regeneration, relies on the exhaust temperature being high enough to automatically burn off, (motorway driving) and or using the ECU to alter the vehicle timing to control the process. In city driving or short trips the regeneration my not take place fully, leading to blocking of the filter. This can lead to higher fuel consumption and a visit to the mechanic for cleaning or replacement.

I think ford call it a ‘vaporiser’, he’s having one of them as well now!

That's it.

I have a plug in my OBDII port which links to my phone. I read the temperature at CAT2 and ensure it makes 550c when regenerating (it usually gets to circa 626c) when regenerating. It does it when town driving or on the open road. I also Know it's happening when the current fuel use on the dash and when idling is showing consumption of 0.3 Gall per Hour, when not regenerating it is 0.1 Gall per Hour.

I also regularly check fault codes, if it doesn't know what the fault is it still gives the fault code.

Fact is dealers will just keep swapping parts

a proper diesel specialist is needed...

Bosch or Delphi agent
