'Since I was assaulted I have been a nervous wreck': Taxi driver in Newport talks of ordeal after being robbed in taxi

https://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/ ... d-in-taxi/

TWO youths who robbed a taxi driver and left him a “nervous wreck” have been sentenced.

The 15-year-old and 16-year-old, who are both from Newport, appeared before Cwmbran Magistrates' Court last week, after pleading guilty to robbery.

The court heard that the youths, who cannot be named for legal reasons, used a withheld number to ring a Newport taxi firm for a lift.

Prosecuting, Alex Debljevic, said once the taxi driver had reached a group of three males, they then robbed him of his mobile and £30 cash.

He said: “Terrence Enos did not pay much attention to the appearance of the men. He was robbed by the behind. While he was restrained he was robbed of his money bag.

“This was a pre-planned robbery.

“They ran off with the money bag and phone.”

Mr Deblejevic proceeded to read out a statement from the victim, who said the incident had left a “big impact” on his life.

He said: “Since the incident when I was assaulted I have been a nervous wreck. Before it I would sleep at night but since becoming victim I cannot sleep.

“When I sleep I toss and turn in a bath of sweat. Whenever I get more than two passengers in the taxi I feel tense and sick. It all comes flooding back to me.

“It is such a big impact on my life.”

Rachel Adams, who was mitigating, said both boys had “difficulties” in their early lives.

She said: “They struggle with some attachments. They both had difficulties in their early life.

“They are now having engagement and having attachments.

“The report says that custody would have the opposite effect.”

But Judge Martin Brown said: “This was, as the prosecution said, planned. And I am not interested in who planned it, nor am I interested in who did what.

“This man was put through an ordeal."

Both youths were sentenced to eight months and 12 months in youth detention. They were also told to pay a £40 surcharge.

This may not, to some, appear a heavy sentence, but for youths of that age it is.

Well done to the judge. =D>
