A taxi driver has suffered a fractured skull after he was attacked by three men in Meadow Well .

Police are investigating after three men are believed to have attacked a taxi driver on Weyhill Avenue at around 12.30am on Wednesday.

It is reported the 28-year-old taxi driver had been flagged down by the men, who then assaulted him and demanded cash.

After attacking the taxi driver, the offenders then stole his vehicle and made off from the scene.

The car was later found by officers burnt out on Brackley Grove, North Shields.

The victim was taken to hospital after suffering a fractured skull and non-life threatening injuries to his face as a result of the incident.

An investigation is ongoing to locate those responsible and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police taped off Weyhill Avenue this morning as officers conducted inquiries. The cordon was lifted at around 10am.

Inspector Judith Scott, of Northumbria Police , said: “This is clearly a very serious incident that left a man hospitalised as a result of a vicious assault.

“We will take robust action against those found to be involved and a team of detectives are now carrying out an investigation to locate those responsible.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area throughout today as officers carry out enquiries and offer any reassurance to the public.

“I would appeal to anyone who has any information, or who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time, to come forward and contact police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 18 260619 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Perhaps the full story has not surfaced yet,it is doing the rounds that the driver was knocking on peoples doors with a wheel wrench in his hand.

That was actually mentioned in another article on the Chronicle's website (as highlighted below) - either a wheel brace or pipe/stick. If I had to guess I'd say he grabbed something for protection, and kept hold of it when knocking on doors seeking help.

Screams, fire and blood: Meadow Well reacts to the 'evil' attack on a helpless taxi driver

https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/no ... l-16489056

Blood remains on the scene after an armed gang leave a 28-year-old taxi driver with a fractured skull

An estate woke up to the sound of screaming as a three-man gang robbed a taxi driver in a "vicious" attack.

Using a weapon, the brutes fractured the 28-year-old's skull and snatched his cash in the middle of the night in Meadow Well.

Horrified locals behind a police cordon woke to blood-stained doors, cars and roads as a manhunt was launched.

A few hundred yards away, police probed the scorched site in which the gang torched the taxi before making their getaway.

Exclusive pictures obtained by ChronicleLive show the vehicle on fire with a witness claiming: "It just went boom.

"There was flames everywhere and there was an explosion every few minutes.

"I thought there must have been guns in the back due to the way it was banging."

Northumbria Police claim the thugs attacked the driver in Weyhill Avenue after flagging him down shortly after 12.30am on Wednesday.

Several locals claimed the driver desperately banged on doors on nearby Avon Avenue seeking help.

"He was braying the door and looked like he had a pipe or stick in his hand," claimed one onlooker, who asked not to be named.

One man, who also requested anonymity, claimed he rushed to the driver's aid until paramedics arrived.

"He was full of blood," claimed the Good Samaritan, who said the man was clutching a 'wheel brace'.

"He had been slashed to his face and was holding his stomach."

ChronicleLive understands the man's injuries, which are not life-threatening, are not thought to be consistent with a stabbing.

However officers were seen carrying out door-to-door enquiries on Wednesday morning as it probed what Inspector Judith Scott called a "vicious assault".

“We will take robust action against those found to be involved and a team of detectives are now carrying out an investigation to locate those responsible," she said.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area throughout today as officers carry out enquiries and offer any reassurance to the public."

Police were also spotted at the scene of the torched car in Brackley Grove.

Neighbours there saw one man flee the burning vehicle down a side street with a "money bag in their hand".

And another local speculated: "The way the estate is built, it is all cul-de-sacs and dead ends, so to take the car where they did, they must have had some local knowledge.

"But I've lived here all my life and I've seen it all over the years, so nothing like this shocks me anymore."

But one person it did shock was Jackie McCann, who woke to find the house she's lived in for five years behind a police cordon.

"It was unexpected," said Jackie.

"It's a nice area and I know Meadow Well did have a reputation but that was a long time ago."

But dubbing the culprits "evil" she added: "I just don't understand them - why do you arm yourselves to harm another human being?

"I'm just shocked it's happened on our street. It's disgusting."

Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 18 260619 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
