Angry Aberdeen taxi passenger tried to gouge driver’s eye

A man has admitted trying to gouge a taxi driver’s eye following a disagreement about where he was being dropped off.

Akter Miah was in the back of Joney Joey Thanabalasingham’s car on his way to a job interview on Saturday, May 4, when he “lost his temper” and began shouting and swearing.

With the taxi coming to a stop, Miah grabbed the driver’s jacket and both fell to the ground in a scuffle on Great Northern Road.

The 34-year-old then tried to thrust his nails into the driver’s right eye, but his arm was pushed away.

Miah appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday and admitted the assault and behaving in an aggressive manner.

His agent, solicitor Laura Gracie, said: “There was a struggle between the two as he had lost his temper with the taxi driver.

“Mr Miah thought the driver was abandoning him at the side of a road he didn’t know.

“He asked him to drive further down as he was on his way to a job interview.”

Fiscal depute Lynne Macvicor said an ambulance was called for Mr Thanabalasingham but paramedics found he only had minor injuries.

Sheriff Andrew Miller sentenced Miah, of School Drive, to 100 hours of unpaid work within the next eight months.

That's a name-and-a-half

In fact if you'd asked me to guess the location based on those two names the last place on earth I'd have guessed would be Aberdeen :-o
