TWO men have been jailed after a shocking attack in a Bradford cab office was caught on CCTV.

Footage of the violence, which took place on Christmas Day last year, was shown to a crown court judge today and captured three men bursting into the premises of A&M Taxis in Thornton Road.

Their victim – 33-year-old Mohammed Shabir – who was working alone, was punched repeatedly as he sat in his chair before one of the men picked up a craft knife from the desk and deliberately slashed him across the back of his neck.

Prosecutor Alisha Kaye said Mr Shabir required 12 stitches in the neck wounds and also suffered a black eye and a fractured eye socket.

She told Bradford Crown Court that two cars, containing eight masked or hooded men, had pulled up outside the office at about 9pm on Christmas Day.

Faisal Munir Hussain, 29, family friend Qasim Ali, 34, and a third unidentified man had gone into the office and Miss Kaye said Ali was heard telling Hussain to “whack him”.

The court heard that during the attack Hussain punched Mr Shabir before picking up the knife and slashing the back of his neck.

Ali’s barrister, Elyas Patel, said the incident was provoked by an attack at another cab firm’s office the previous day. “Of course it can never be right or justifiable to engage in a reprisal attack of some sort or indeed to take the law into one’s own hands,” he conceded.

“But the events of the day before make plain that this wasn’t an unprovoked attack. Their sense of grievance was real.”

Miss Kaye confirmed that four men had been charged with affray and were due to appear in court next month.

Hussain, of Toller Lane, Bradford, pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm and today he was jailed for five years and five months.

Ali, of Legrams Lane, admitted a lesser unlawful wounding charge and he was locked up for 14 months.

Hussain’s barrister Ian Brook highlighted a medical report which described the neck wound as “superficial” and he stressed that his client had not taken the knife with him to the cab office.

Mr Brook said the knife had been used “on the spur of the moment” and had not been premeditated.

Judge Jonathan Gibson was referred to various testimonials for both men which spoke about their charity and community work.

Mr Patel said Ali had thrown some “quick-fire punches”, but when the knife was deployed he withdrew completely and played no further part in the assault.

Jailing the pair, Judge Gibson accepted there had been some provocation due to the earlier incident, but that was offset by the fact that the assault at the cab office was in a sense a “revenge attack”.

“The background relates to on-going disputes between two taxi firms in this city,” said the judge.

“I understand members of the rival firm have been charged with affray arising out of an earlier incident. However of course having said that you had no right to assault Mr Shabir who was working as a taxi controller on his own in his office at the rival firm that night.

“All of your actions were caught on CCTV and I have viewed the CCTV which shows a violent and vicious attack although the attack itself only lasted for a very short period of time.”

He also states it wasn’t an unprovoked attack so that means it must have been a premeditated attack.

Not correct,crooked and dishonest operators are to blame.Similar to the ice cream wars of years ago.

Watching Sky News earlier this evening, and a top surgeon said it doesn't need the knife to go far into the body to kill someone.

Depend where it is on the body and all that kind of stuff. Could be quite a long wound, but not that deep, and not near anything important, so although it might need 12 stitches, in clinical terms it might be considered 'superficial'.

Of course, as Sussex says, if it's a different part of the body then the same wound could prove very serious, or even fatal.

FOUR men have avoided an immediate jail sentence over a reprisal attack on a Bradford minicab firm.

The threatening and violent behaviour took place in the early hours of Christmas Day 2018 and was captured on CCTV, which was shown to Bradford Crown Court yesterday.

The men - Mohammed Shabir, brothers Mahboob Hussain and Dawoud Hussain, and Ben Egan -attacked the premises of Ace Budget Cars on Thornton Road, over a dispute.

The court heard yesterday how the men had variously thrown a petrol can, a cone and wheelie bins, as well as kicked cars, with one man throwing punches, as they tried to gain entry to the cab office.

Prosecutor Heather Gilmore described how Shabir, 33, Mahboob Hussain, 39, and Dawoud Hussain, 37, all of St Leonard’s Road, Girlington, had been working at rival firm A&M Taxis, also in Thornton Road.

They had been receiving threatening phone calls in the run-up to the incident, she said, and late on Christmas Eve a brick was thrown through the window of a vehicle outside the office, leading Mahboob Hussain to give chase.

She added that Shabir and Dawoud Hussain had caught up with Mahboob Hussain, and they drove a Mitsubishi Shogun to Ace Budget Cars.

“A male approaches Mahboob, who he alleges smashed a window at A&M Taxis, and the pair swing at each other, fighting, with Mahboob ending up on the ground,” said Miss Gilmore.

She added that the trio, who had been joined by a drunk Ben Egan, 37, failed to gain entry to the cab office as worker Mohammed Yasin had locked the door.

All four approached the office, kicking and pulling at the door, with Egan kicking at the wing mirror of a nearby taxi.

“Mahboob drives at speed to towards the office, and Mr Yasin thought at that point they were going to drive into the office,” the prosecutor added. Around £1,000 of damage was caused in the incident.

All four men pleaded guilty to affray and were sentenced to a six month jail term, suspended for 18 months for three defendants, and two years for Egan.

Mahboob Hussain and Egan were ordered to complete work in the community, of 150 hours and 180 hours respectively.

Shabir and Dawoud Hussain received curfews lasting four months.

In mitigation, Dawoud Hussain was said to be ashamed of his behaviour, with his barrister adding: “He shouldn’t have gone, he should have left it to the police.”

Mahboob Hussain was said to have fractured his jaw in the incident, having got involved as “a response to extreme provocation”.

His barrister added that the men had already paid £350 to the cab driver whose vehicle was damaged during the incident.

Shabir was said to have suffered “traumatic” consequences from a violent attack which took place later the same day involving the two rival cab firms. “He’s not been able to work since. He does regret his actions."

He was punched repeatedly and slashed across the back of his neck, for which Faisal Munir Hussain, 29, of Toller Lane, was jailed for more than five years at a hearing in July.

Egan, of Albion Place, Thornton, was said to have “acted impulsively” by getting involved and had simply been wanting to get a taxi home.

Judge Colin Burn said Egan did not even have a “bad excuse” for his behaviour, adding of the incident: “Emotions were so high, you weren’t able to focus your attention on causing any serious damage and in Mr Egan’s case, you were too drunk.”

So this mush is waiting for a cab home, yet involves himself in the tear ups.
