A suburban London taxi driver, commonly known as a ‘Yellow Badge’, has been caught using a "bought" full licence ‘Green Badge’.

The cabbie was caught after Transport for London's Taxi and Private Hire Enforcement Unit were on patrol in the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

After being stopped for having a faulty brake light, it was discovered that the driver was working illegally outside of his licensed sector, using a Green Badge which wasn’t his own.

The Metropolitan Police took to Twitter to say: "#0T510E #CabsUnit and @TfLTPH on patrol in #HammFul this morning stopped this taxi for having a brake light out. Turns out he was a Yellow Badge driver and had "bought" the Green Badges for the vehicle working illegally. A day in court awaits. #dotheknowledge #noshortcuts."

With suburban London being divided into sectors, a Yellow Badge driver is strictly prohibited from plying for hire outside of the sector for which they are licensed. A Green Badge, or "all London" licensed driver may ply for hire anywhere within the Metropolitan London area, which also includes Yellow Badge sectors.

Other London taxi drivers responded to the Met's tweet by praising the enforcement team’s action, with @Bigtrev1981 tweeting: “Top job."

@saicompany1 said on Twitter: "Some people want everything for nothing, well done boys and girls."

There has been no further comment from Metropolitan Police Service at this time.

Think this has been a long-term problem in London - fake and/or bought green badges?

The 'bought' badges are a bit like the illegally hired plates in some places outside London. Of course, there the value is more in the plate than in the badge.

I think our good friend Trotsky has said this has been going on forever.

But at least this driver will never be driving a London cab again.
