Private hire taxi with faulty brake light leads police to drugs and cash

Officers made arrests after stopping car on Sheil Road

Two men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of drug offences after police stopped a private hire taxi which had a brake light out.

Officers stopped the Peugeot Partner at around 8pm last night on Sheil Road in the Kensington area of Liverpool.

There was a strong smell of cannabis from the taxi, and police found drugs in the car, the force said today.

The driver was detained at the scene.

Police then carried out a raid on an address in Parliament Close in Liverpool city centre. They found cannabis, cannabis oil and cash.

Two men aged 24 and 54 were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply cannabis. A woman, 45, was also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply cannabis.

All three have been taken to police stations for questioning. The Peugeot private hire taxi was stopped by officers working on Operation Target which is aimed at disrupting serious and violent crime across Merseyside.

Inspector Jordan Quinn said: “This was an excellent example of proactive policing, and is exactly why Operation Target is so effective.

"We know that criminal activity is being disrupted by the action we have been carrying out in our local communities in the past three months.

“As well as our officers on patrol identifying and disrupting suspected serious and organised criminals, a lot of this success is down to information from those communities affected by such issues.

“Therefore, I would continue to urge people to come forward with information about criminality in their area. Passing on information about where weapons are being stored, who is carrying them and who is dealing drugs in your community is essential to allow us to take action.”

Anyone with information on suspected drug dealing in their community can speak to local officers, or pass information via @MerPolCC or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
