I Have a private hire badge looking for a dual badge allowing me to still do private work and Hackney.

•Is there any further tests that I need to do if yes what
•price what is the rough price to get dual badge

Any advice you can offer much appreciated

It all depends on which local authority you're badged with.

Fees will differ, and while in some the criteria to get a dual badge will be the same or broadly similar as for a PH badge, in others it will be a whole lot more difficult.

And that's assuming your council even offers a dual badge in the first place. Many don't, as far as I'm aware.

But most councils seem to have the kind of information you need on the licensing section of their websites these days, or at least it should provide you with a broad idea of what's required.

The easiest way to get this information would be to ask your licensing team.

Not sure if there's official stats about how many councils offer dual badges.

But looking at the latest DfT stats, there's certainly no consistency. Most of the Tyneside/Northeast local authorities seem to offer them, while most of those in Merseyside/Greater Manchester don't. (I'm assuming that a zero figure for the DfT stats for dual badges mean that they aren't available, but I suppose in some cases it could conceivably simply mean that no one wants one. Or that the stats are incorrect.)

Dual Badges are a really bad idea.

Authorities sell the idea by saying "Cheaper than having both" which is usually correct to be fair.

The downside is you end up with "Conditions" that PH Drivers have to abide by but Hackney Drivers have to be governed by Bylaws.

To change Bylaws is expensive and time consuming. A new "Condition" comes in overnight.

Dual license came into Sheffield in early 90's I think,voted by cabbies so they could float from HC to PH with ease.No loyalty ever since in my opinion.

I agree they're a bad idea, although I thought if a driver were to be put in front of a committee the license is effectively separated depending upon which condition / byelaw the driver contravened?

Ironically the council could use a PH condition as information in order to raise prosecution against the HC part of the license.

For what it's worth, drafted this at the time, and meant to check it before posting, because I know how some on here like to pick holes

But kind of lost the will to live about it, and couldn't be bothered getting back to it, but thanks to Captain Cab for reminding me.

Not that it's any great shakes, but it did my head in thinking about it. For at least five minutes



So basically three different scenarios. In Leicestershire, for example:

HC and PH badges only, eg Blaby

Dual badges only, eg Oadby & Wigston

HC, PH and dual badges, eg Harborough

Maybe a fourth scenario in Hinckley & Bosworth, where there's no HC badges recorded, but there are PH and dual badges.

So the latter is maybe similar to the Scottish HC badges, which by default allow you to also drive PH. So they're effectively the same as a dual badge in England, but they're not described as such. However, a PH badge in Scotland allows you to drive PH only.

To be honest if someone has done wrong I couldn't care less what legislation brings that driver to book.

However dual licenses have saved many drivers a fair bit of money, and has also helped many of them continue working when their cars are off the road.
